Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson‘s ex-husband, died at age 48 on Thursday, August 7, after privately battling cancer for more than three years — a struggle that remained hidden from the public eye.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away,” a family representative told Us Weekly in a statement. “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family.”

What makes Blackstock’s death particularly shocking is that neither he nor Clarkson had ever publicly discussed his illness. Throughout his three-year fight with cancer, fans, media and the general public had no indication that the talent manager was facing a serious health crisis.

The first public hint of any family health issues came just one day before his death, when Clarkson, 43, announced she was postponing her Las Vegas residency due to personal reasons.

“Unfortunately, I need to postpone the remainder of the August Studio Session dates in Las Vegas,” Clarkson wrote on Wednesday, August 6. “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.”

The revelation adds new context to Clarkson and Blackstock’s relationship following their divorce. After nearly seven years of marriage and two children together, Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in 2020.

The American Idol alum and Blackstock finalized their proceedings in 2022, with Clarkson being granted primary custody of their children. Despite their legal battles, it appears the former couple maintained their co-parenting relationship while Blackstock quietly fought his illness behind the scenes.

Months before Blackstock’s death, Clarkson had alluded to personal challenges she was facing privately while celebrating the 1,000th episode of her talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, in March.

“For 1,000 episodes, we have laughed together, we have cried together with beautiful stories, sang together with some people, danced together, celebrated and competed together,” she said during the episode.

“I’ve lost, alone, a lot, and along the way, we found comfort in one another. And looking back, we are all incredibly proud of what we’ve built and the community we’ve created.”

Brandon Blackstock’s Cause of Death

Brandon Blackstock tragically passed away after battling cancer for more than three years. According to the family representative’s statement, the talent manager had been privately fighting the disease since approximately 2022, though the specific type of cancer was not disclosed to the public.
