The stars of The Brady Bunch are revealing which of the characters had the most “depth” to their storylines
In a new episode of The Real Brady Bros. podcast, Barry Williams and Christopher Knight share their thoughts on the most “troubled” of the Brady kids — and the one who was “not very bright”
Both agree that the middle children tended to have “the most depth”
Barry Williams and Christopher Knight are detailing who they think had the most compelling storylines on The Brady Bunch.
On the May 20, 2025, episode of The Real Brady Bros. podcast, Williams and his co-host and costar answered fan questions, including one that asked which Brady boy and which Brady girl they thought had the most interesting storylines in the show.
Said Williams, who played eldest sibling Greg Brady: “I think Jan had the most interesting storylines, because Jan had more depth. She was more troubled. She was a middle child in a classic kind of sense. And, you know, a little bit sisterly towards Cindy, but kind of competitive with Marcia.”

“And she always seemed to have a lot of angst, which I think gave her some depth in the show,” Williams, 70, added. “And you know, Marcia was kind of like the ultimate California beach girl, you know, cute and nice and popular. And Cindy, you know, she was kind of … eavesdropping, a tattletale, you know, not very bright through most seasons, character-wise. So Jan, I think, had really interesting kind of waters to navigate.”
Knight echoed those thoughts, adding that his own character — middle boy Peter Brady — had that same depth.
“I think using that same logic, Peter would have the same or or a similar sort of breadth, if you will. And I think the reason for that is it’s pretty easy to define what the youngest is supposed to be and write kind of cliché to that — the tattletale — and the oldest — the leaders,” he said.
Knight, 67, continued: “And in so far as both Marcia and Greg played that leader role, Bobby and Cindy were the young kids that were cute. In the middle, there’s no definition. You can go any number of ways.”
Still, Knight noted that Bobby, the youngest Brady brother, was not a “typical” youngest child.
“There was a lot of crossover between Bobby and Peter, really. I mean, in some ways, the character’s kind of interchangeable. He doesn’t get in as much trouble, but he’s not kind of leading the charge,” Knight said.

Knight added that Bobby made a lot of interesting choices in the show, such as an episode in season 4, when he becomes obsessed with the legendary outlaw, Jesse James.
“The choice of, like, following Jesse James just was — that’s a wild kind of mindset for whatever it was, a 12-year-old, 11-year-old to have as a hero,” Knight said.

Elsewhere in the episode, Knight added that the middle children characters — Jan and Peter — were able to be more deep because they weren’t hindered by the tropes of the eldest and youngest children.
“I think it’s interesting because when you look at someone in the structure of the family, you got the oldest, the youngest, we know what that is,” Knight said. “But what is in the middle? The middle takes up this all this under-defined space. And by consequence, I think the it leaves the writers more freedom to explore different personality traits.”
