NEED TO KNOW

  • For the cast of Boy Meets World, filming one season 6 episode felt like a “disaster”

  • “Me and Ben, we were not having fun,” Rider Strong said of him and the show’s star, Ben Savage, who played Corey

  • “Those memories completely infected what otherwise is a very funny script,” Strong said

The cast of Boy Meets World is remembering one particular episode that felt like a “disaster” — but wound up being funny, despite a less-than-ideal atmosphere on set.

On the July 31 episode of the rewatch podcast Pod Meets World, cast members Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle touched on the difficulties on set of season 6, episode 19, which seemingly stemmed from actor William Daniels (who played Mr. Feeny) and director Micky Dolenz (a former member of the group The Monkees).

“Me and Ben, we were not having fun,” Strong said of himself and the show’s star, Ben Savage, who played Corey. “And my memory is entirely based on the experience on the set, which was not fun this week. For whatever reason, we were miserable.”

Added Friedle: “I agree with you 100%. That’s what I remember, was that this was not a good week for us as a company. “

“You know, I remember Bill … struggling this week,” Friedle said. “Just the kind of atmosphere that was brought on to the set this week was not a great one, and there were some struggles that were going on there. And I think that bled down to kind of the rest of us.”

When Fishel asked if there was “conflict” on set, Friedle answered that there was, between “Micky and Bill” — and that it had to do with how much physical comedy Daniels had to take on in the episode.

“I think Bill was, you know, Bill had a lot to do this episode… Suddenly, you know, he went from what? Two lines of an episode for a while, and to having to do a lot of comedy, to having to do physical stuff … So I think that he was under pressure. His wife was there. You know? I don’t know what happened, but it was not a good on-set environment,” Strong said.

Strong added, “I didn’t consciously remember that it was Bill being upset. But, like, I could tell, especially in the scene where Ben and I are breaking all the stuff. Like, we are low energy … I could tell it was laborious for me, even watching it [back].”

Elsewhere in the episode, Friedle recalled, “I remember just not going well the whole week. I mean, just that was every time we stepped into that set, it was not a good time.”

Still, the actors all agreed that the show still wound up being funny, and that the audience at home likely had no idea of the challenges on set.

“Those memories completely infected what otherwise is a very funny script and, like, totally fun. Totally fun episode,” Strong said.
