Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg put aside his past tense relationship with former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and endorsed the 2025 mayoral hopeful on Tuesday afternoon.

“In sizing up the field in the race for mayor, there is one candidate whose management experience and government know-how to stand above the others: Andrew Cuomo,” Bloomberg, a Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat who served three terms as New York City’s mayor, said in a statement endorsing the disgraced ex-governor. Bloomberg and Cuomo were rumored to have a fraught relationship while they served concurrently as mayor and governor, with some speculating that their egos clashed constantly, according to a New York Times article published in 2011 when both men occupied the respective offices.

During the Big Apple’s last mayoral contest, Bloomberg endorsed current Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams — who is now running for reelection as an independent, despite remaining a registered Democrat.

The former mayor’s announcement comes as high-profile Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed socialist Zohran Mamdani — who inches closer to Cuomo in the Democratic primary polls, with the former governor ahead by only two points in one internal poll, Politico reported Monday.

New York City will hold its mayoral primary elections on June 24.
