Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s Relationship: All About the Musicians’ Decade-Long Romance

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have been together for over a decade!

The pop star and the country singer began as friends while they competed as coaches on The Voice season 7 in April 2014. At the time, they were both with their respective spouses. Stefani married Gavin Rossdale in 2002 and Shelton tied the knot with fellow country singer Miranda Lambert in 2011. In the summer of 2015, both Shelton and Stefani announced they were getting divorced.

Their friendship later turned romantic, and they began dating in late 2015. Stefani and Shelton dated for five years before he proposed, and they married in July 2021.

The couple have been going strong ever since. Shelton talked to PEOPLE in May 2025 about his 10 years with Stefani and said, “I feel like that might be the key to happiness, is that it feels just as exciting and new and happy.”

From their time as colleagues to celebrating 10 years together, here’s everything to know about Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s relationship.

They met while working as coaches on The Voice in 2014

Shelton had been coaching aspiring singers on The Voice since season 1 in 2011, but Stefani didn’t join the crew until season 7 in 2014. They guided hopeful singers alongside Adam Levine and Pharrell Williams.

During their first year of coaching, Shelton was still married to Lambert, while Stefani was still married to Rossdale, with whom she shares sons Kingston, Zuma and Apollo. However, Shelton and Lambert announced their divorce in July 2015, and Stefani and Rossdale shared the news of their split just one month later.

Stefani and Shelton bonded over their similar situations, with the pop singer telling Howard Stern in July 2016 that it was “unbelievable that God would put us in a position to have each other at that moment, in the same exact moment.”

Meanwhile, Shelton echoed the sentiment in a 2016 interview with Billboard, saying, “Gwen saved my life. Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile divorce from another musician? You can’t even imagine the similarities in our divorces.”

PEOPLE confirmed their romance in November 2015

Despite Stefani telling Stern that she “wasn’t trying to start a relationship” after her divorce, she and Shelton couldn’t help but notice their bond.

“Blake and Gwen are going through similar situations,” a source told PEOPLE in October 2015 after they were seen attending a Halloween party together. “They have spent time together and have drawn support from each other.”

The following month, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that Stefani and Shelton were happily dating.

“Blake and Gwen have begun dating,” the insider said. “They’ve been supporting each other through a difficult time and they’re really happy together. Everyone is thrilled because they’re both incredibly nice people.”

Stefani and Shelton made their red carpet debut at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in February 2016. A partygoer later told PEOPLE that they “acted like giddy teenagers at a high school dance.”

“They were holding hands the whole night and didn’t leave each other’s sides,” the attendee added. “I don’t think either of them stopped smiling the entire time they were there.”

Six years after their red carpet debut, Stefani reflected on the moment during an October 2022 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

“I think I played at the party and then we went out that night. That melts me when I see it. It’s such a moment for me — a good one,” she said while smiling.

They released their first song together in 2016

Although the couple had previously sang together on The Voice, they didn’t release their official first song together until May 2016.

Stefani worked with Shelton on the song “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” as part of his 10th studio album, If I’m Honest.

“She and I sat down and wrote this song about some serious insecurities that we had when we first started down this road with each other, and we both had trust issues,” he told PEOPLE in May 2016. “We were getting over it, but we wrote this song about it. And it’s perfect.”

Meanwhile, Stefani reflected on that moment in a 2024 interview with PEOPLE and revealed that his songwriting won her over.

“He sent it to me, and it was a half-written song. He was like, ‘Help me finish this.’ So I wrote him the verse back — the second verse on the song — and it’s just over text,” she recalled. “That was our first song that we ever wrote together. We were never even in the same room, but we were writing a song to each other.”

The following year, it was Shelton’s turn to collaborate with Stefani, so he helped sing “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” as part of her 2017 Christmas album. They went on to perform the single together on The Voice and at the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting later that year. When she released a deluxe version of the album the following year, she also posted a goofy music video with Shelton as Santa.

The couple went on to work together on the 2019 song “Nobody But You,” the 2020 song “Happy Anywhere,” a cover of Wynonna and Naomi Judd’s song “Love Is Alive” in 2023, the 2024 song “Purple Irises” and a duet on his 2025 album, For Recreational Use Only.

Stefani and Shelton performed their love song “Nobody But You” at the 2020 Grammys and during her Grand Ole Opry debut in 2022. Two years later, they sang “Purple Irises” together for the first time before Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.

“We come from such different worlds. Our musical tastes are different, yet we do come together in this one place: We both love ’70s soft rock and yacht rock,” she told PEOPLE in November 2024.

They announced their engagement in October 2020

Stefani and Shelton both excitedly shared on Oct. 27, 2020, that they were engaged.

They each shared the same photo of them kissing in front of a fireplace while Stefani showed off her new ring. She captioned her post, “yes please! 💍🙏🏻,” while Shelton wrote under his post, “Hey @gwenstefani thanks for saving my 2020… And the rest of my life. I love you. I heard a YES!”

Stefani later explained that Shelton had brought their families together to show them their new Oklahoma property when he asked her to get a fire starter out of a cabinet.

“So I opened the cabinet and there was a ring in a box and I was like, ‘Ahhh! What?! Are you serious?!’ ” she recalled on a December 2020 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The “Rich Girl” singer later told Today in January 2021 that both she and Shelton had “a lot to consider” before getting married.

“I think there was a lot to consider when you have so many people involved,” she said. “Children, and their hearts, and everybody in my family [and] his family, we all went through a lot together … There was a lot of healing to do.”

They married in July 2021

Stefani and Shelton married on July 3, 2021, in an intimate wedding at his ranch in Tishomingo, Okla. They had their close friend and host of The Voice, Carson Daly, officiate the nuptials.

For their special day, Stefani wore a custom Vera Wang silk gown with a sweetheart neckline, while Shelton donned in a classic black tuxedo. She later changed into a Vera Wang “custom lily white Italian silk crepe and hand tumbled tulle strapless mini dress” for the reception.

Both Shelton and Stefani shared photos from the wedding, with Stefani writing in her caption, “July 3rd 2021 dreams do come true !!! ❤️🙏🏻.”

For their first wedding anniversary, Shelton posted a photo from the ceremony on Instagram and wrote, “Happy anniversary to the woman that makes my world go round… @Gwen Stefani, because of you, this year has been the best year of my life. I love you!!!! Thank you for saying yes!”

Shelton is a stepfather to Stefani’s children

Before saying “I do” to Shelton, Stefani was married to British singer Gavin Rossdale from 2002 to 2015. During that time, they welcomed sons Kingston, Zuma and Apollo.

While Stefani and Rossdale have found a way to amicably raise their sons together, she’s also had Shelton by her side to help co-parent. Shelton told Today in July 2020 that he was still trying to figure out the balance of being a stepfather.

“That’s a scary moment for me because it’s one thing for me to be with the kids all the time and be their buddy, but you do have to consider after a while that they start to listen to things that you say. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that,” he said at the time.

Shelton later told PEOPLE in December 2022 that he takes his role as their stepfather “very seriously” and prioritizes that over his career.

“Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously. The kids see me as a very important person in their life,” Shelton said. “[When they ask,] ‘Why isn’t Blake here?’ I take that stuff to heart.”

They both gave emotional speeches during their respective Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremonies

Both Stefani and Shelton honored the other’s professional and personal accomplishments while receiving their respective Hollywood Walk of Fame stars in 2023.

Shelton received his star first in May, and during the ceremony, Stefani praised him for his humility and work ethic.

“The reason Blake Shelton is here today on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is because you are part of the country dream, the Hollywood dream and you are part of the American dream,” she said at the time. “And everybody knows you are my dream come true. I love you.”

After accepting his star, Shelton thanked his wife for her kind words and added, “I kind of stopped checking things off my list of great accomplishments in my life when I married Gwen, so this is just icing on the cake. I love you so much, and that’s the great thing that’s happened along this journey.”

Just a few months later, Shelton and Stefani swapped roles when she received her Hollywood Walk of Fame star in October.

“In my opinion, Gwen is the perfect person to receive a star on the Walk of Fame,” he said, while she teared up. “From music, television and movies to fashion and beauty. She rose to the top over and over again with her unique style that has made the world fall in love with her — not as much as me, though.”

During her acceptance speech, Stefani told Shelton, “I love you so much. You have given me the kind of love I never knew before. The minute I met you I knew I was home and I’m so so proud that you’re mine. I can’t believe it.”

Shelton reflected on being with Stefani for 10 years

In May 2025, Shelton spoke with PEOPLE about how time has flown by with Stefani as they celebrate their 10th anniversary together.

“It honestly does [feel like time is flying by]. Some of the things that we talk about, we’re to the point in our relationship that it’s like, ‘Oh, remember what happened…’ and you realize, ‘Oh my God, that was 8 years ago!’ It’s like, how did this happen so quickly?” he said.

Shelton acknowledged that “10 years is a long time,” but added that it “still feels new for me.”

“I feel like that might be the key to happiness, is that it feels just as exciting and new and happy,” he shared.

Shelton added that he was looking forward to spending the summer with his three stepsons and said, “Gwen and I pretty much have our summers wide open. We both have a few shows here and there, but nothing that’s tying us down to keep us from going and doing something fun. We don’t have any plans — which is our favorite plan.”
