Billy Joel‘s first ex-wife, Elizabeth Weber, revealed where they stand today more than 40 years after their divorce.
“If I wanna talk to him or if I have something to say, I am able to contact him whenever I want to,” Weber, 76, said of Joel, 76, in an interview with Us Weekly published on Sunday, August 10. “But he has a wife and he has children and right now, he’s struggling with something that’s … that’s a big thing.”
Joel announced he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus in May. The brain condition “happens when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside your skull and presses on your brain,” according to the Mayo Clinic, and it can “affect several brain-related abilities, including thinking and concentrating, memory, movement and more.”
“So, [our relationship] is as close as it needs to be for two people who decided to divorce 40 years ago,” Weber continued, sharing that she “of course” reached out to Joel when he revealed his diagnosis.

The former couple met when Weber was married to Joel’s best friend and former bandmate, Jon Small. Joel and Weber began an affair, which led the band to break up. The “Piano Man” singer also battled a severe depression over the situation and attempted to commit suicide twice, which was detailed in his HBO documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes.
Weber and Small eventually divorced, and she reconnected with Joel before they married in 1973. They remained together until 1982.
Weber shares son Sean Weber-Small with her first husband, and she revealed that her child and grandchildren even have a relationship with Joel.
“I have my grandchildren that he knows and they know him,” she said. “My granddaughter Ella taught Bill what TikTok was and showed him what was happening. And his relationship with Sean is important to both of them.”
Weber continued, “So, we’re not distant but we’re, you know, and he lives in Florida and I live in California. But it’s all good.”
Following his split from Weber, Joel was married to Christie Brinkley from 1985 until 1994. His third marriage was to Katie Lee from 2004 until 2009, while he married his current wife, Alexis Roderick, in 2015. Joel shares daughter Alexa Ray Joel, 39, with Brinkley, 71, as well as daughters Della Rose, 9, and Remy Anne, 7, with Roderick, 43.
