Leave it to Bill Murray to remind us that fashion rules are meant to be broken – especially on the famously glamorous Cannes Film Festival red carpet. The 74-year-old icon, adored for his unique charm and legendary comedic timing, once again redefined premiere style in the most Bill Murray way possible.

As the global film world flocked to the French Riviera for the dazzling debut of Wes Anderson‘s latest movie, The Phoenician Scheme—an espionage black comedy already buzzing after receiving a reported six-minute standing ovation—Murray, a long-time friend and collaborator of the director, made his own unforgettable entrance on Sunday, May 18th.

While others opted for traditional tuxedos and lavish gowns, Murray chose an ensemble that screamed comfort, confidence, and pure, unadulterated cool. He hit the red carpet in a pair of shorts, comfy sneakers, and the undeniable centerpiece of his look: an evil-eye patterned jacket. It was a look that only Murray could pull off.

That jacket featured the ancient evil-eye symbol. For centuries, across many cultures, this powerful emblem has been seen as a talisman to ward off negativity and bring good fortune. So,  in true Murray style,, he brought some extra good vibes to the premiere.

The film itself, The Phoenician Scheme, is classic Wes Anderson, boasting an incredible all-star ensemble cast. We’re talking Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton (Kate Winslet‘s daughter), Michael Cera, and, naturally, Murray himself, a returning member of Anderson’s cinematic family. The story reportedly follows a wealthy magnate (played by del Toro) who, after an assassination attempt, makes the surprising decision to name his estranged daughter (Threapleton), a nun, as his sole heir. The specifics of Murray’s role is still under wraps.

This isn’t the first time the Ghostbusters and Lost in Translation star has wowed fans with his wonderfully unconventional fashion. Murray’s 2021 Cannes appearance for Anderson’s The French Dispatch, where he also rocked shorts and a vibrant printed shirt had the same flair. From his famously eclectic golf attire to his delightfully unpredictable red carpet moments, Murray has always favored personal expression and fun over dress codes.

Fans awaiting The Phoenician Scheme won’t have to hold their breath for too much longer. After its celebrated debut in Cannes, the film is set to hit U.S. theaters on May 30th.
