Bill Belichick Says CBS Interview Presented ‘False Narrative’ That His Girlfriend Jordon Hudson ‘Was Attempting to Control the Conversation’

Bill Belichick said he was “surprised” when reporter Tony Dokoupil, during an interview for “CBS Sunday Morning,” asked about topics unrelated to his new book — and said that the segment that aired was “selectively edited” to create a “false narrative” that his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, was trying to control the interview. CBS News responded that it had not agreed to any “preconditions or limitations to this conversation,” something that was “confirmed repeatedly” with Belichick’s book publisher before and after the interview.

Belichick, formerly the longtime coach of the New England Patriots who left the club at the end of the 2023 season, was hired by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to be the football team’s head coach in December 2024.

In the “CBS Sunday Morning” interview, when Dokoupil asked how Belichick, 73, met the 24-year-old Hudson, she spoke up — sitting off-camera — to say, “We’re not talking about this.” In the segment, Dokoupil said in a voiceover, “It’s a topic neither of them is comfortable commenting on.”

In a statement provided by UNC Chapel Hill, Belichick said, “I agreed to speak with ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ to promote my new book, ‘The Art of Winning – Lessons from My Life in Football.’ Prior to this interview, I clearly communicated with my publicist at Simon & Schuster that any promotional interviews I participated in would agree to focus solely on the contents of the book. Unfortunately, that expectation was not honored during the interview.

“I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced, and I repeatedly expressed to the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, and the producers that I preferred to keep the conversation centered on the book,” Belichick’s statement continued. “After this occurred several times, Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion. She was not deflecting any specific question or topic but simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track. Some of the clips make it appear as though we were avoiding the question of how we met, but we have been open about the fact that Jordon and I met on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021.”

According to Belichick, the final 8-minute segment that ran on “CBS Sunday Morning” “does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative — that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation — which is simply not true.”

In a statement, CBS News said: “When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview. There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.”

Separately, CBS News is facing a $20 billion lawsuit filed by President Trump, who alleges a “60 Minutes” segment in October deceptively edited an interview with Kamala Harris and therefore interfered with the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Parent company Paramount Global has moved to dismiss the suit, calling it “an affront to the First Amendment.” Lawyers for Trump and Paramount were reportedly set to initiate mediation Wednesday on a potential settlement to the lawsuit.
