Carter Schwalb, a senior business analytics major at Bradley University and head of the school’s AI club, notes, “I’ve seen a lot of instances, even from talking to professors, of the students just blatantly submitting ChatGPT-generated responses.”

While agentic browsers offer undeniable convenience, promising to automate tedious tasks and streamline workflows, their use in an academic context raises alarms about the erosion of fundamental learning skills. Schwalb, despite experimenting with these tools for personal tasks like trip planning, actively refrains from using them for hands-free assignment completion.
His reasoning underscores a critical educational dilemma: “I need to keep my ability to critically think and I think that needs to be emphasized, probably both from teachers to their students as well as parents to their their children.” Offloading all intellectual work to AI tools, Schwalb argues, could lead to a generation of students less capable of independent thought and problem-solving, skills vital for both academic success and future careers.
Beyond Cheating: The Alarming Privacy Risks of Agentic AI
The concerns surrounding agentic browsers extend far beyond academic dishonesty. A study co-authored by University of California, Davis Ph.D. student Yash Vekaria, revealed significant privacy vulnerabilities associated with generative AI assistant browser extensions. These tools were found to collect and share sensitive personal data of their users. Vekaria explains that this “may involve collecting information and storing information which is sensitive to a user.”
The study, conducted in late 2024 before the widespread adoption of agentic browsers, found that their conclusions apply even more critically to these newer, more autonomous tools. Vekaria warned, “The assistant is always present in the side panel, so it’s able to access and view everything that the user is doing. Agentic browsers collect all this information and have, if not similar, at least more risks in my opinion.” The implications are clear: a tool constantly observing a user’s online activity represents a massive privacy footprint.
A particularly concerning finding was the exfiltration of student academic records when these AI assistant tools were used on platforms like Canvas. Vekaria stressed, “In general there should be more regulatory enforcement that should happen,” highlighting a significant gap in current digital privacy protections for students.

He draws parallels to past technological revolutions, stating, “I haven’t seen a good enough argument against AI to be fully adopted at a university, other than we don’t want kids using it which is just not reasonable. It’s like the internet coming out and telling somebody not to use the internet or like the Industrial Revolution and telling somebody not to make something on an assembly line.”
