For years, Erin Murphy, who famously played Tabitha Stephens on Bewitched, diplomatically avoided choosing between her two TV dads, Dick York and Dick Sargent. Now, the former child star has finally offered a “scoop,” revealing her definitive pick for the better Darrin Stephens and reflecting on the classic sitcom’s enduring magic.

For fans of the beloved 1960s sitcom Bewitched, the question of which actor portrayed Darrin Stephens better—the original Dick York or his replacement Dick Sargent—has been a subject of friendly debate for decades. Now, an insider has finally weighed in. Erin Murphy, who played the enchanting young Tabitha Stephens, has ended her long-standing diplomatic silence, openly sharing her preference for one of her TV dads.

A Long-Awaited Revelation from Tabitha Herself

In an exclusive interview with People magazine, Murphy, now 60, delivered a highly anticipated answer. “I will give you a scoop. My entire life I have been so diplomatic because I loved them both,” she explained. “They were wonderful guys.” However, after rewatching the show, Murphy came to a clear conclusion: “Watching the show, Dick York is a better Darrin.”

This admission comes as Bewitched recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking six decades since the magical sitcom first graced television screens in 1964. The show’s enduring charm and timeless humor continue to captivate audiences worldwide, from original viewers to new generations discovering its magic through syndication and streaming.

The Darrin Dilemma: Why the Change?

The role of Darrin Stephens, Samantha’s mortal husband, was initially brought to life by Dick York from 1964 until 1969. York’s portrayal was widely praised for its warmth, comic timing, and genuine chemistry with co-star Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha Stephens). This dynamic was crucial to selling the show’s central premise: a mortal man navigating an extraordinary life married to a witch.

However, a serious back injury forced York to leave the series mid-run. As he shared in an interview with Filmfax before his passing in 1992, he asked producer William Asher to be released from the show due to his deteriorating health. The casting change was abrupt and, to many viewers, unexplained at the time, leaving fans “rattled” as Dick Sargent stepped into the role of Darrin in 1969, continuing until the show’s conclusion in 1972.

Pop culture historian Geoffrey Mark, a close friend of showrunner William Asher, highlighted the challenge York’s departure posed for the production in an interview with Woman’s World. Mark noted, “He had given the character of Darrin such warmth and comic range, and while he could be exasperated, he was also deeply human.” The decision to simply replace a lead character without explanation was “rare for the time,” and indeed, people noticed.

A Child Star’s Perspective: Paternal Warmth vs. Different Dynamic

Murphy’s preference for Dick York stems from her personal experience with the actor on set. “Dick York was a dad and he had a lot of kids and he was just more paternal,” Murphy elaborated to People. “So he was more like a dad.” She also fondly recalled York reading stories to her, as revealed in an interview with Closer Weekly.

While she maintained that Dick Sargent was also a “great guy” and that they remained in touch until his passing in 1994, Murphy acknowledged a “different dynamic” with Sargent. “His Darrin seemed angrier,” she said, though she reiterated having “only positive things to say about both of them.” This nuanced perspective from someone who worked closely with both actors offers a unique insight into the on-screen and off-screen differences.

The Enduring Legacy of ‘Bewitched’

Even six decades after its debut, Bewitched continues to resonate with audiences across the globe. Murphy expressed her gratitude for being part of such a beloved series, noting its intergenerational appeal.

The show’s success is attributed to several key elements:

  • Magical Premise: The enchanting blend of fantasy and family comedy.
  • Well-Written Scripts: Clever storytelling and witty dialogue that held up over time.
  • Amazing Acting: Stellar performances from the entire cast, particularly Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York, and Agnes Moorehead.
  • Relatable Messages: Underlying themes about acceptance, identity, and the challenges of being “different” in a conventional world.

Murphy fondly recalls moments of discovering the show’s global reach, like a driver in Italy recognizing her and facetiming his family, or knowing that Bewitched is loved in Japan. This global appreciation underscores the universal appeal of its lighthearted charm and subtle messages. For fans of classic television, Murphy’s candid revelation adds another fascinating layer to the rich history of one of television’s most iconic sitcoms.
