Ben Stiller’s ‘Epic’ ‘Star Trek’ Pitch Has Fans Saying They ‘Can’t Wait’ originally appeared on Parade.
While he’s known for directing and starring in such hilarious movies as Zoolander and Tropic Thunder — not to mention executive producing and directing the decidedly less comedic but still wildly popular and critically-acclaimed series Severance — Ben Stiller is just a (self-professed) Trekkie at heart, and it turns out he has some big ideas for the sci-fi universe.
In a recent red carpet interview with E! News, Stiller had an immediate and enthusiastic response to a reporter’s request for Star Trek “pitches,” declaring, “I think it’s time for Star Trek to be back on the big screen.”
“It’s one of my favorite franchises and shows,” Stiller continued. “I think, you know, the original idea of Star Trek is so strong and I think there’s a lot to build off of, especially now with what’s going on in the world it’s pretty important…it’s an important time to have Star Trek movies out in the world.
When asked about his “favorite element” of Star Trek, Stiller praised “the relationships, the friendships between the crew and their willingness to kind of sacrifice for each other and the differences they had too.”
“That was always the great thing with Kirk and Spock, sort of this triumvirate that each were coming from, and issues from a different place. So that’s always for me been the core,” Stiller explained.
Commenters were definitely on board with the idea of Stiller being involved in a new Star Trek project, with one declaring, “Ben Stiller’s take on Star Trek sounds epic! The crew’s bond and sacrifice really hit different. Can’t wait to see more!”
Of course, as longtime fans know, Stiller’s passion for Star Trek is nothing new. In an interview with Vanity Fair earlier this year, the Reality Bites star admitted that his “most treasured possession” is “the Spock ears that Leonard Nimoy gave to me,” going on call his “collection of Star Trek memorabilia” his “greatest extravagance.”
