Selma Blair has been open about her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2018 and how it’s affected her life over the years. The beloved Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde actress has been working on new projects, though her career has slowed since her diagnosis.

On Wednesday, July 16, Blair appeared at the Travel + Leisure 2025 World’s Best summit to discuss the importance of accessible travel for people with disabilities. She opened up about how MS has affected her while traveling.

“I have dystonia, which is often misunderstood as difficult or drunk,” Blair explained.

According to the Mayo Clinic, dystonia is a neurological movement disorder where the brain sends faulty signals to muscles, causing involuntary or repetitive muscle contractions. These contractions can lead to twisting, jerking, tremors, or abnormal postures in various parts of the body.

“When I actually have to hone in, I can get a little bit of spasticity and my dystonia kicks in — so I was always kind of nervous to travel even though it was the biggest light in my life,” the Hellboy actress explained.

“MS is totally strange. We’re not making it up, usually, I mean, unless it’s a really bad dinner,” she quipped. “I go under scaffolding and all of a sudden it sounds like I have cerebral palsy — so the airport is stressful.”

Blair, who suspects she was living with MS for 25 to 30 years prior to her diagnosis, is now living in remission and enjoying travel again. She shared the one hotel upgrade that she splurges on when she’s on the go.

“Make sure you have a room with a view,” she said, since she may end up spending a lot of time in it. “I always make sure that I have a beautiful room.”

She continued, “It would be lovely if there is room and you see someone with a disability coming, and ask yourself, ‘Is there a view, is there a way to make this a little more enjoyable?’ Because this might be their vacation.”
