Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell have adopted an unconventional approach to cursing in their household.
The Parenthood alum, 50, revealed during the Monday, July 28, episode of his “Armchair Expert” podcast that he and the Nobody Wants This actress, 45 — who have been married since October 2013 — let their daughters, Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, use swear words to an extent.
“I fully swear in front of my kids,” Shepard told his guest Seth Meyers. “They are allowed to swear, not with impunity, but when it’s called for. … And they land it and it’s in the house and not out at a restaurant, it’s OK.”
Shepard then explained what he is teaching his daughters through the freedom of the family’s language.

“My defense of it is, I just told the girls, like, ‘Hey, these are noises that come out of your mouth, and you assign what they mean to you,’” he said.
For his part, Meyers, 51, and his wife, Alexi Ashe, have banned their sons, Ashe, 9, and Axel, 7, from cursing. (The couple, who tied the knot in September 2013, also share daughter Adelaide, 3.)
“For us, it’s the fear that they’re gonna take it to school,” Meyers noted, adding that he felt like it was easier to prevent girls from swearing at school than boys.
Meanwhile, Bell has been forthcoming in the past about her daughters learning the F-word, insisting during a 2020 appearance on Strahan, Sarah and Keke, “It’s fine.”
“They’ve known it before, but we’ve been the type of parents that never react,” she continued. “You can’t.”
While Bell revealed that she and Shepard “don’t edit” their language around their kids, her husband offered Lincoln and Delta an explanation for why they couldn’t use swear words at the time.
As she recalled, “He said, ‘Listen you’re a kid. There are a lot of things that you can’t do until you’re an adult. One of them is drive my car, one of them is drink alcohol, vote and say swear words. It’s as simple as that.’”
