Beloved Actor, 73, Makes Personal Admission About Ex Carrie Fisher originally appeared on Parade.
Dan Aykroyd still speaks kindly about his ex-fiancée and dear friend Carrie Fisher, even after all of these years.
In an open Q&A session during the first day of San Diego Comic Con, Lee Keeler of Stereogum asked the Canadian actor multiple questions about Dragnet, working with Paul McCartney of The Beatles and his thoughts on Blues Brothers graphic novels previously released.
One of the topics that was brought up was Fisher, the late American actress known for her role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars films and Aykroyd’s ex-fiancée. The two maintained a close friendship after their breakup, even after Fisher married Paul Simon. The actor has always spoken fondly of their relationship and even mentioned how Fisher embraced his friends and family, while he was welcomed into hers.
“She was a committed professional and one of the wittiest people you could ever meet. To me, she was a loving person. I mean, we almost got married,” the Ghostbusters star recalled. “We got blood tests and everything. We had a beautiful romance, but that ended when the movie ended. Then she went back to Paul Simon.”
Aykroyd and Fisher first met in 1978 on the set of Saturday Night Live, where Aykroyd was a cast member and Fisher served as the episode’s host. Afterwards, the couple both starred in the 1980s film The Blues Brothers, where they fell in love and were even briefly engaged. But Fisher ended up calling off the engagement and reunited with Simon instead. Fisher passed away back in December 2016 in Los Angeles after suffering cardiac arrest. She was 60 years old.
After leaving SNL in 1979, Aykroyd became a major film star and writer. His work in The Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters received massive critical acclaim and made him the star he is today. He then went on to appear in numerous comedies and dramas, earned an Oscar nomination for Driving Miss Daisy, then later launched other business ventures like his own vodka brand.
Currently, the 73-year-old entertainer is promoting the new Z2 Blues Brothers graphic novel, The Blues Brothers: The Escape of Joliet Jake, which is set to hit the shelves on October 7.
