You know that feeling when you’re on your period and you’re bloated and your back aches and you simply cannot envision a world in which you could be persuaded to get out of bed, but you have to because you have work? Bella Hadid sure does—and she thinks it’s time to put an end to this torturous practice. In fact, Bella thinks it should be illegal to make a woman work while on their periods.
The supermodel pitched her idea for period medical leave in a new interview with British Vogue. Speaking about how her transition into modeling at 18 affected her relationship to her body and how she looks into the mirror, Bella had a stroke of genius. “I had just moved out of my parents’ house and gone straight into a world where you have to stare in the mirror every single day. And we get our periods,” she said. “You’re shooting Victoria’s Secret on your period, with [endometriosis]. That should be illegal.” Amen!
She continued, “I’m going to talk to the White House about it, because we should literally ban women working on the week of their period. And the week before, to be honest.” I’m usually not in favor of celebrities becoming politicians, but Bella for President is sounding really good to me right now.
Bella, who reportedly has endometriosis, ADHD, depression, anxiety, PMDD, PCOS, and Lyme disease, is no stranger to the struggle of having to work through chronic pain. “I think nobody really understands chronic illness,” she told British Vogue. “It’s hard to take a shower most days.” She continued, saying that on her rare days off, “If I can get in the shower and make myself breakfast, I see that as an accomplishment.”
In part to cope with the stress of work and “having to look in the mirror every single day,” Bella created an alter-ego, Belinda. “Belinda just does her job. She slays. She can be crying from 5am to 7am but by the time she gets to work, a smile’s on her face and she’s going to do her job and get through it. That’s Belinda for me,” she said.
