‘Back to the Future’ Star Clears Up Decades-Long Mystery Over One of Her Iconic Scenes originally appeared on Parade.
Actress Claudia Wells is best known to movie fans as Jennifer Parker in the first Back to the Future film. Wells, 59, played Marty McFly’s girlfriend—portrayed by Michael J. Fox—in the classic 1985 film when she was just 19 years old.
A year later, a head-on car accident derailed her career, and she stepped away from appearing in the sequels after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Actress Elisabeth Shue replaced her in the role. Wells later opened a clothing store in Los Angeles.

Despite stepping away from the franchise, Wells remains closely associated with the iconic film and continues to share behind-the-scenes stories with fans. In a recent video shared to social media, Wells opened up about what was really happening during her memorable “band scene”—and what made her smile so brightly on camera.
“A lot of people ask me what I was thinking in that band scene as Jennifer Parker,” she said. “And Bob Zemeckis, the director—who’s so magnificent—asked me to dance. But I was so shy that I was kind of like…” she said, before demonstrating her awkward attempt at the dance.
She continued, “Also, when I’m smiling so much, it’s because Michael J. Fox, who plays Marty, is looking at me from the stage—and it went right into my soul and made me a little bit nervous.”
