An avalanche near Lake Tahoe has resulted in the deaths of at least eight skiers, prompting an investigation into possible criminal negligence. The incident occurred on Tuesday when a large slab of snow slid off a mountain, engulfing a group of 11 skiers and four guides who were on a backcountry ski trip.

Authorities are working to determine if any factors contributed to the avalanche that could be considered criminal negligence. The group, which included experienced skiers and guides, was caught off guard by the sudden slide, which happened despite an avalanche watch being issued two days prior and an avalanche warning on the morning of the incident.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with CBS News reporting that California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health is also investigating Blackbird Mountain Guides, the company that led the ski trip. The guides were all certified avalanche safety instructors, according to Blackbird.

Incident Details and Response

The avalanche occurred near Castle Peak, about 10 miles north of Lake Tahoe, in an area known for its deep snow, rugged terrain, and lack of trails or ski patrol. Rescue efforts were hindered by treacherous conditions, but a break in the weather allowed teams to locate the bodies of eight of the nine missing skiers. One skier remains missing and is presumed dead.

Survivors of the avalanche described a frantic scene as they tried to find and unbury their friends, with some managing to free three individuals who unfortunately did not survive. The incident has been described as the deadliest avalanche in the United States since 1981.

Investigation and Aftermath

As the investigation into the cause of the avalanche and potential negligence continues, the community is coming to terms with the tragedy. Blackbird Mountain Guides has expressed deep sadness over the incident, describing it as an “enormous tragedy” and the “saddest event our team has ever experienced.”

The avalanche serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in backcountry skiing and the importance of heeding avalanche warnings. With the ongoing investigation, there is hope that lessons can be learned to prevent such tragedies in the future.
