The stars are out on the steps of the Met this evening, including Audra McDonald. The Broadway legend, who is currently headlining in the revival of Gypsy, is on the host committee for this evening’s event.
McDonald, who also appears in the HBO series The Gilded Age, which is set to return for a third season this summer, paid homage to the evening’s “Tailored for You” dress code with an outfit worthy of the tony New York elites featured in the series.
McDonald wore a cream-colored gown by Harbison in a classic hourglass shape, which leaned into the Gilded Age look with a voluminous ruffle at the hips, wrapping around the back into a sweeping opera cape train. For a touch of modern edge, the front of the gown was studded with macrame flowers with glittering jeweled centers.
The theme of tailoring tonight is in honor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s spring fashion exhibition titled Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Per the Institute, the exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism,” using pieces from the Institute’s clothing and accessories collections as well as paintings, photographs, and other ephemera dating from the 18th century to modern times. They add that the presentation, “explores the importance of style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, particularly in the United States and Europe.”
The theme marks the first time the Institute has highlighted menswear in more than 20 years, and its first exhibition ever focused on Black designers.
