By our count, Anne Hathaway has now attended eight Met Galas, beginning in 2009 with “The Model as Muse.” So it’s safe to assume she knows a thing or two about how to do it right. Last night, she gave Met Gala beginners a lesson in after-party dressing with a quick-change move that took her from the red carpet directly to the dance floor.
For the gala itself, Hathaway worked with Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon on an ensemble that paid tribute to André Leon Talley, the writer, editor, and beloved fashion-world figure. The reference felt apt for several reasons: For one thing, the ever-dapper Talley was one of the most recognizable dandies in the New York fashion scene for decades, and the gala was pegged to the Costume Institute’s new celebration of dandyism, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Talley was also a close friend of Carolina Herrera herself, having interviewed her when she launched her label in 1981.
Other celebs have referenced Talley in moments surrounding the Met Gala—Doechii even recreated a famous photograph of him with tennis gear—but Hathaway’s look was more subtle. For inspiration, Gordon visited the Savannah College of Art and Design, where Talley donated his personal fashion archive. He was struck by the presence of white button-down shirts. “A crisp white shirt is the critical foundation for many dandy looks,” he told Bazaar, “and something that André had a deep love for, which he shares with Carolina Herrera.”
That white shirt became the foundation of both Hathaway’s red carpet look and her after-party ensemble. At the gala, she wore it with a back-and-silver striped column skirt decorated with 200,000 beads and rhinestones, a pair of towering black heels, and an enormous Bulgari diamond necklace bedecked with an egg-sized sapphire.
For the after-party, she kept the same shirt, but removed the jewels, slipping into something a little more comfortable. “I love that Anne decided to wear our oversized shirt for both the gala itself and then to the afterparties—changing out of the embroidered skirt and into high-waisted capri pants she could dance in and let her hair down,” said Gordon. She styled the very on-trend capris with silver kitten heels and a pair of oversized sunglasses despite the rain and the late hour, and in the photos from the event, she looks relaxed, happy, and as stylish as ever.
Talley would undoubtedly have approved. As the brand pointed out, he once wrote, “It is a moral code to dress well. Whatever your budget — you can wear a white shirt…and be well dressed.”
