Anna Delvey Still Refuses to Watch ‘Inventing Anna’: Why the Real-Life Scammer Can’t Stand Her Own Story

Anna Delvey, the convicted scammer who inspired Netflix’s ‘Inventing Anna,’ still refuses to watch the series, calling it “insufferable” and criticizing Julia Garner’s portrayal of her accent. Here’s why the real-life fake heiress can’t stand her own story.

The Unwatched Series

Anna Delvey, the woman whose elaborate scams inspired Netflix’s Inventing Anna, has still not watched the series. In a recent interview on The Hidden Third podcast with Mariana van Zeller, Delvey revealed that she has no plans to watch Julia Garner’s portrayal of her. “I still have not watched it,” she stated. “I watched the clips that were out there that are unavoidable, but no. I never watched it. I just found it insufferable. I thought it was very hard.”

Delvey’s reluctance stems from her time in jail when the series premiered in 2022. “When the series came out, I was in jail, so I didn’t have the option to watch it,” she explained. “When I got out, I was just so busy, and it was like half a year later. I’m like, ‘Why would I do this?'”

Criticism of the Portrayal

While Delvey hasn’t watched the full series, she has seen enough to form an opinion. She criticized Garner’s portrayal of her accent, saying, “I don’t think my accent is this over-exaggerated.” Despite Garner receiving an Emmy nomination for her performance, Delvey remains unimpressed. “It’s not up to me to judge. I’m obviously biased. It is what it is, I can’t change it. It’s out there.”

Financial Gains and Legal Troubles

Delvey acknowledged that Netflix paid her a significant sum for the rights to her story, though the payments were staggered. “They paid me, yeah,” she said. “It was about [$320,000], I think. I guess it was never certain it was going to happen. I guess at first they optioned it for a year, and then it actually got produced. It was never like, ‘Oh, here’s all this money, bye.’ It was always in stages, and it was always a possibility, like, it’s not going to happen or it’s not going to come out.”

Delvey’s legal troubles began in 2019 when she was convicted of attempted grand larceny, second-degree larceny, and theft of services. She was sentenced to four to 12 years in state prison and released on parole in February 2021 after serving 19 months. However, her legal issues continued when she was taken into custody by ICE for allegedly staying past her visa. She was jailed until October 2022, when she was released on bail but required to remain under house arrest in New York City. Her house arrest was extended to a 75-mile radius in August 2024, allowing her to compete on Dancing With the Stars.

Fan Reactions and Cultural Impact

The series Inventing Anna has had a significant cultural impact, sparking discussions about scams, wealth, and the media’s portrayal of real-life events. Fans have been divided on Garner’s performance, with some praising her for capturing Delvey’s essence and others agreeing with Delvey’s criticism of the exaggerated accent.

Delvey’s story continues to fascinate the public, and her refusal to watch the series adds another layer to her enigmatic persona. Whether she will ever watch Inventing Anna remains uncertain, but her comments provide a unique perspective on the portrayal of her life.
