André 3000 knows all the keys to a rocking head-turning look.
On Monday, May 5, the soon-to-be Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee stepped out at the 2025 Met Gala with a piano strapped to his back. Yes, a piano.
The OutKast alum, 49, attended the annual event in New York City in a Burberry look in collaboration with Benji Bixby — an evolution of his former ’00s fashion line, Benjamin Bixby. Styled by Law Roach, the musician, real name André Benjamin, wore a zip-up navy jumpsuit, red hat and held a garbage bag in one hand.
On his back, secured with white straps, was a Steinway Model S baby grand, according to The Cut, which notes the piece was a smaller-scale version designed by Pink Sparrow and made of foam, luan, and 3D-printed elements.
Luckily for André, and according to the outlet, the accessory only weighed a fraction of what the actual piano would have at 30 pounds.
The look marked André’s take on the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme, which coincides with the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. He has previously attended the Met Gala in 2005 and 2008.

André’s rather instrumental look wasn’t done at random, either, as it helped mark the surprise release of his new seven-song project, 7 piano sketches, which features a cover of an apparent illustrated version of André with a piano also strapped to his back.
7 piano sketches follows his Grammy-nominated LP, New Blue Sun.
“The original title for it was ‘The Best Worst Rap Album In History’ and here is an excerpt from the original liner notes,” the musician shared in a release on Monday of the latest project. “‘It’s jokingly the worst rap album in history because there are no lyrics on it at all. It’s the best because it’s the free-est emotionally and best I’ve felt personally. It’s the best because it’s like a palette cleanser for me.’”

It’s been a major few weeks for the musician, who on April 27 was announced as a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee alongside his OutKast group mate Big Boi. The legendary hip-hop duo will earn their place in the hall during the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction in November, alongside the likes of Bad Company, Chubby Checker, the late Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Soundgarden and the White Stripes.
“Each of these inductees created their own sound and attitude that had a profound impact on culture and helped to change the course of Rock & Roll forever,” Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, John Sykes, said in a statement. “Their music gave a voice to generations and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”
