Andie MacDowell and her daughter Rainey Qualley share a love of vintage fashion.
“Some of my greatest joy is fashion. I love fashion, but I try to be conscious … and buy things that are gonna last and think about that. I get that from her,” MacDowell says of her oldest daughter. “She encourages me to shop my closet.”
The mother-daughter duo did just that at their photo shoot for PEOPLE’s World’s Most Beautiful issue, where they posed in MacDowell’s vintage Alberta Ferretti gowns. (The one Rainey modeled was first worn by her mom at an event in Spain in 2017.)
“My mom’s influenced my taste, the colors that I’m drawn to and just, like, the romanticism that [she] decorates her whole life with,” says the actress and singer, 36, who will release her single “Horse” on May 16 followed by her debut album, Before Blue, in August.

The photo shoot was a family affair. Rainey’s partner Anthony Wilson proudly snapped behind-the-scenes photos on his phone and held the couple’s four-month old daughter Bluebell Coyote Wilson.
Later, the Off the Record actress pulled double duty — caring for her baby and answering questions — all while demonstrating her casual cool style. She went barefoot for the interview and MacDowell, 66, quickly followed suit, slipping off her own slippers.
Rainey and MacDowell — who is also mom to Justin and Margaret Qualley — are constantly learning from each other.
“I remember one time when she was living in New York, we were walking down the street, these guys started catcalling her and she didn’t have on a scarf and I asked her to cover up, and she reprimanded me, saying it’s not her responsibility to cover up for them,” says MacDowell, who stars in Hallmark’s The Way Home. “That was a lesson for me.”

“The only time she does that anymore is if she thinks my dresses are too short,” says Rainey. Adds MacDowell, laughing: “Yeah I do.”
How would you describe each other’s style?
Rainey: I think Mom has several different kinds of personalities that she would lean into. If she’s going to do a red carpet, I think it’s more romantic and glam and beauty but I think there’s sort of classic feminine undertones. And then, more of your traditional everyday is almost western, jeans and button-ups.
MacDowell: And sometimes I wear some great suits too! Rainey is a die-hard, don’t-consume person, and she’s very conscious about the earth and shops only [for] used clothes or…
Rainey: Vintage stuff.
MacDowell: So, a lot of times I feel really guilty because I do love… Clothes do make me happy. I do enjoy them very much. Some of my greatest joy is fashion. I love fashion, but I try to be conscious…She doesn’t have hardly anything in her closet. She’s very minimalist. She’s not a consumer. She wears the same things over and over again and over and over again. I’m always trying to buy her something.
What items have you been saving for your daughters?
MacDowell: Great jewelry. I gave her a new piece today. Rainey’s smaller than me so a lot of my stuff won’t fit her. And my shoes, they wish they could have worn my shoes. I have killers. I have original Prada shoes that are phenomenal. I just have remarkable shoes, but neither one of my daughters can wear my shoes.
Rainey: My feet are too small. My sister’s are too big. I just had a baby — maybe her feet will be just right.
MacDowell: I’ll say I’ve still got those Pradas. I’ve got two pairs of Prada shoes that are so amazing. You can try them on now, see if they fit you.

On Andie: Gap shirt & jeans. Bvlgari jewelry. On Rainey: Gap shirt & jeans. Talent’s own vintage jewelry.
So if shoes aren’t an option, what are the things you do borrow from your mom?
Rainey: I just visited my mom in South Carolina; I borrowed one of her coats when we went out, to cover up one of my little dresses. [Laughs]
MacDowell: Actually, I got that coat from Margaret. It’s a hand-me-down … I think it was a Burberry coat. I scarfed that off her. I don’t know how I got it.
Do either of you have any fashion regrets?
Rainey: There have definitely been looks that I’ve worn on the red carpet that I’ve seen photos of years later that I did not like — but whatever.
MacDowell: You could see my nipples through this one dress. At the time I didn’t care, but in retrospect I was like, “Hmm, that probably wasn’t cool.”
I’ve still got that dress, though. It’s in my closet. I think it might be too big for you, but it’s really pretty. I don’t think I’m ever going to wear it.
Rainey, what would you be shocked to see your mom wear?
Rainey: I think I’m pretty open. I don’t think I’m really shocked by anything anybody wants to wear.
MacDowell: Yes, this is true. She’s not a judgmental person and she’s very much into: “Whatever makes you happy, you should do it.”

What’s your favorite look that she has worn?
Rainey: There’s actually these photos of her from the ’80s for some beauty shoot where you had a bird’s nest in your hair.
MacDowell: Oh, that was for L’Oréal.
Rainey: She used to have this big pile of like all these magazines that she was in. I used to look to them every Christmas…and I would just spend hours looking at all the old spreads of her. There’s so many great looks in there.
MacDowell: Oh, God. I need to work on getting those back. I hope they’re still around.
