The tour, of course is named after Brandy and Monica’s 1988 single, which spent 13 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
In addition to Brandy, Monica and Jamal, Grammy winners Kelly Rowland and Muni Long will also join the 24-city arena tour.
Jamal was the first Black man to win Idol, since season 2 champion Ruben Studdard in 2003.
“I made history?” Jamal asked a select group of reporters backstage at a roundtable after his win that it had been 22 years since Ruben Studdard won. “That’s good to know. That’s really good to know.”

The Meridian, MS, single father of three daughter’s first single, “Heal” by Tom Odell, released on Republic Records, was originally not intended to be an R&B song, but as Lionel Richie told Jamal, he has the ability to turn any song into an R&B song. He “Jamalarizes” them.
“I really studied the lyrics,” Jamal said of this talent. “I read them, I write them, and I put myself inside of them. I am, ‘What’s on this paper that I can relate to? What situation have I been through that I can relate to? And I just go from there.”
Now American Idol fans across the U.S. will be able to see Jamal perform in person when the tour begins on Oct. 16 in Cincinnati, OH.
