Tonight is the series finale of And Just Like That… and I’ll admit, I’m sad about it.

I know many fans rejoiced when they heard on Aug. 1 that the show is coming to an end after three seasons — and it’s not that hard to understand why. After all, the show has never actually made sense. The women seem like they were plucked from 2004, plopped into present day, and just can’t grasp how the modern world operates.

And sure, the storylines have become dull and muddied by having too many characters. Even with the departure of Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman) this season, the writing has struggled to elevate Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury) and Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) in a way that fills the immense void that Samantha (Kim Cattrall) left in her absence.

I agree that there were far too many cringe moments to count (but just to name a few: Aidan’s hand licking… Aidan and his Belstaff jacket… Aidan leaving the meat on the counter …).

But what I don’t agree with is having the series come to an end.

On Aug. 1, showrunner, writer and director Michael Patrick King announced the news that episode 12 of season 3 will be the last. “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop,” he announced on social media.

I may have rolled my eyes pretty much nonstop since the show premiered in 2021, but the reason I tune in again and again and again, is because I need to see what’s going on with my girls, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis).

These ladies have been in my life for over 15 years and opened my eyes to so many things: the power of female friendships, the rules of dating, the magic of New York City… I can go on and on.

I may have started out of order (the first Sex and the City the movie came out when I was in high school) but I was hooked. I worked my way through the series, and as I caught rerun after rerun on TV, it became comfort viewing.

I loved watching this quartet of funny, glamorous women who were not afraid of anything (well, maybe clowns — “there’s nothing scarier than a clown”). They became a clique I, and my group of girlfriends, could lean on for wisdom and laughs.

Sure, they still got on my nerves at times during the original series. There’s never been a more accurate way to sum it up than with the “Big is moving to Paris” meme. Carrie’s delusion has always been present so maybe I wasn’t as surprised as others when AJLT picks up with her in a bubble of privilege with Big?

I’ll never be able to explain how Miranda went from a whip-smart lawyer to someone who doesn’t know how to exist in an office space, and I didn’t like that Charlotte lost the surprise and edge that made her one of the most interesting girls of the group. She may have acted like a prude but in the original series, she pushed the envelope right alongside the rest of them.

I was always able to get past their new personalities and just let the episodes take me along for the ride because having two movies (Sex and the City 2 premiered in 2010) and a revival series was a treat that views rarely get with other beloved shows. We were able to catch up with friends we haven’t seen in years — yes, they might have changed, yes, we might be annoyed by they way they act now, but seeing them together somehow made everything right.

I hope even if this is the end of And Just Like That… the showrunners don’t give up on the idea that fans like me will want to know where our girls end up 10, 15 years down the line.

It’s the end of an era, but I’m holding out hope it’s not the end of a beautiful friendship.

The finale of And Just Like That… premieres Aug. 14 on HBO Max.
