Alicia Silverstone Recalls Having to Kiss 30-Year-Old Actor When She Was Only 15 originally appeared on Parade.
Few actresses experienced as meteoric a rise in the film industry as Alicia Silverstone.
Entering the entertainment industry in 1992, the Clueless star quickly found success in both television and movies, landing a guest role on an episode of The Wonder Years before starring in the 1992 thriller, The Crush.
Though it’s hardly discussed at all today, The Crush ultimately provided Silverstone with one of her first major breakthrough roles, paving the way for her later appearances in a 1993 Aerosmith music video and her starring role in 1995’s cult favorite, Clueless.
A steamy thriller starring both Silverstone and The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes, The Crush follows Elwes’ ordinary magazine writer as he’s obsessively pursued by his landlord’s teenage daughter (Silverstone).
Just as is the case for the movie’s underlying plot, Elwes and Silverstone entered the film with a drastic age gap, Silverstone being 15 at the time while Elwes was 30.
As a result, Silverstone remembers having mixed feelings about their on-screen kiss together in The Crush, especially given the nearly 14-year difference between their ages.
“I had to kiss the guy from The Princess Bride!” Silverstone toldEntertainment Weekly in a recent interview.
“I was young, so because we had this kiss in the film, I thought that that meant he was my boyfriend now,” the actress went on with a laugh. “Not really… but a little bit.”
With the publicity surrounding The Crush, Silversone was suddenly thrust into the public spotlight while still just a teenager: an experience she described as “really hard” in her interview with EW.
“It was really hard, because you’re just a little girl,” Silverstone pointedly said. “You’re a little person and trying to grow up, and you’re growing up in front of people. For any human, it’s an awkward time…. For any human, most of life is pretty awkward.”
