NEED TO KNOW

  • A couple with a penchant for adventure got engaged on Mount Everest

  • Kelsey Bone and Scot Pominville decided to chase a similar high — literally — for their wedding, which recently took place atop Mount Kilimanjaro

  • “I figured I’d always kind of end up eloping or something like that — kind of combining adventure with love,” Bone said

A couple of adventure-seekers started their married life together 19,341 feet up.

Kelsey Bone and Scot Pominville have been together for the last seven years — traveling, hiking and chasing beautiful corners of the world by each other’s sides, per the CBC. In September, their connection reached a record (geographical) high — they got engaged on Mount Everest — and their wedding on Mount Kilimanjaro followed suit.

While flying to Nepal for the couple’s big hike up Mount Everest, Pominville had been carrying around an engagement ring in his bag. He told the outlet that his and Bone’s belongings were mixed together, and there was a chance Bone could stumble upon the ring before the right moment. “Luckily, she never did,” Pominville told CBC.

Bone had realized their trip’s potential for a memorable engagement, and she recalled thinking the famous rock on the mountain’s southeast ridge route would be the most likely place for Pominville to pop the question, if he was planning to. However, she told CBC that she was still caught off guard when he pulled out the ring.

“I think we’re going to get some photos and then look to my side, and there he is, down on his knee,” Bone recalled. The rest was “lost in the moment,” she said, but they’ll always cherish the complete privacy of the location for them to savor their first hours as an engaged couple.

Bone and Pominville “weren’t really big wedding people,” she said, so they kept nontraditional nuptials on the table as they contemplated their future together.

“I figured I’d always kind of end up eloping or something like that — kind of combining adventure with love,” Bone said. Pominville added, “I always said, ‘the important part is who it’s to, not where it is or what it is.’ “

According to the CBC, two of the couple’s friends invited them on a hiking trip up Mount Kilimanjaro with them, but Bone said she and Pominville didn’t want to “overshadow their trip at all” and thus tabled the idea of eloping. However, that changed when one of their friends shared they’d just gotten ordained to officiate a wedding.

Bone found a used dress online, something lightweight that could stretch “over hiking gear,” she said. The first one she went to try on turned out to be perfect, she told the outlet.

The couple and their friends spent seven days hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro, savoring the beautiful hike alongside their wedding anticipation. During the final stretch, Bone stepped into her wedding dress, and she and Pominville said “I do” at the mountain’s peak.

“I was one of those kids that actually never dreamed of my wedding,” she said. “This was absolutely perfect.”
