Since Yellowstone, the flagship series in the ever-expanding Dutton universe, (seemingly) ended its run last year, there have been no shortage of rumors about what’s in store for the franchise’s future. From the upcoming The Madison—which has been billed as a spinoff of the original series, though how it connects to Yellowstone remains unclear—to the Beth and Rip spinoff (which has begun announcing early casting, despite that fact that it has yet to be officially announced by the network) the potential for follow-up series continues to grow. However, we now know about at least one project for certain: the previously rumored CBS series centered on the youngest Dutton son, Kayce, is officially on.

Back in March, Puck’s Matt Belloni reported that CBS was considering a new procedural show set in the Yellowstone universe, with eyes on Luke Grimes to reprise his role as Kayce for the main character.

In May, Variety confirmed the deal revealing the series’s working title, Y: Marshals, along with an official synopsis:

“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

It now appears that casting is underway, with the reveal that And Just Like That actor Logan Marshall-Green will be joining Grimes in the show as Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s time in the military.

The series will reportedly have an initial 13 episode run, with an eye toward an early 2026 air date—a fact later confirmed by Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, during a May 2025 earnings call. During the presentation, McCarthy explained that the series will be, “premiering on CBS and next day on Paramount+ globally starting in Q1 of 2026.” Filming is expected to begin this summer.

As had previously been rumored, Spencer Hudnut, who has been involved with CBS hits like SEAL Team, will helm the series with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Grimes among the executive producers. Hudnut has supposedly been working on ideas for the series for over a year.

The fact that the series is in development by CBS is notable, as historically Yellowstone and its prequels, 1883 and 1923, have aired on Paramount Network and Paramount+ respectively (both Paramount properties and and CBS fall under the Paramount Global umbrella).

“I think all of our shows right now are both streaming and linear. That’s what we’re focused on, is trying to make our shows work on both platforms,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said about the decision to place Y: Marshals on the network. “It certainly did occur to us that the show will do really well on streaming, because all the Taylor shows have. But Yellowstone and Tulsa King also did really well for us when we aired them on the network.”

She added of Sheridan’s potential involvement, “We’re still early in the process. He’s a very busy guy, but we’ll take what we can get.”

Yellowstone did air its back catalogue on CBS during the joint WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, however a CBS-based spinoff would seem to raise questions about future streaming rights. Yellowstone—famously and infamously—streams exclusively on Peacock as part of a deal struck before the advent of the Paramount+ streamer.
