“A Goofy Movie” Gives Fans a 360-Degree Virtual Reality Powerline Concert Experience for Film’s 30th Anniversary: Get a Sneak Peek

Powerline may be a fictional pop star, but A Goofy Movie fans can still get the concert experience they’ve been craving since 1995.

In honor of the cult classic’s 30th anniversary, Disney has released a virtual-reality version of the iconic concert scene at the end of A Goofy Movie, in which Goofy (Bill Farmer) and his teenage son Max (Jason Marsden) surprise Max’s idol Powerline (Tevin Campbell) onstage.

In the scene, Goofy, Max and Powerline perform an impromptu dance — which Goofy kicks off, modeled after his “Perfect Cast” fishing maneuver explained earlier in the film — to Powerline’s banger “I2!,” arguably the most popular song on the movie’s soundtrack to date.

“Utilizing innovative digital technology combined with the timeless artistry of classic animation, the VR concert will give fans the chance to fully experience the thrill of a Powerline performance like never before, as if they were on stage in front of the sold-out audience,” an official release states.

The “concert” can be experienced through a virtual reality headset (by moving your head around to see the 360-degree show), on mobile by moving your device in different directions and on desktop, by clicking and dragging your mouse around to view from all angles or selecting the control panel at the top-left corner of the video.

Fans are instantly transported to the final concert scene in the movie, in which Goofy and Max pop in on Powerline unannounced and the trio perfectly execute the dance, to the delight of the live audience and those watching from home, including Max’s crush Roxanne (Kellie Martin).

The popular Perfect Cast/”I2I” dance has been recreated countless times by fans all over the world, at conventions, on Disney Cruise ships, in father-daughter dances at weddings and beyond.

The scene was also discussed in depth in the newly released Disney+ documentary about the making of A Goofy Movie, titled Not Just a Goof.

Director Kevin Lima said in the documentary that Powerline’s performance of “I2I” — sung by real-life musician Campbell, 48 — was the hardest scene to pull together.

“Just because of the number of effects, all the lighting. It was incredibly complex,” he explained.

Shared storyboard artist Steve Moore, “We were on this little soundstage in Burbank. You’ve got this video camera guy and he’s going to tape this whole group of dancers doing the Powerline sequence.”

“We couldn’t have done what we did in the animation without it,” Moore added.

Not Just a Goof and A Goofy Movie are both streaming now on Disney+.
