It’s the year of SZA.

In the past two months, the 35-year-old singer has won a Grammy, performed with Kendrick Lamar at the Super Bowl halftime show and starred in the No. 1 movie One of Them Days alongside Keke Palmer. Before heading on tour with Lamar next month, SZA wanted to check one more thing off her bucket list: playing Catwoman. In a new ad for State Farm with Jason Bateman, SZA brings to life the iconic DC Comics character.

“It’s been a fun year,” the singer-songwriter told Yahoo Entertainment. “Catwoman was a gnarly opportunity to play, and I thought it would be so cheeky. Why would I ever not play Catwoman?”

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

That “bring it on” attitude has certainly served her well so far in 2025. In February, she joined Lamar in New Orleans where they performed the hit songs “Luther” and “All the Stars.” Apple Music’s halftime show set an all-time Super Bowl record of 126 million viewers.

“That was so not even [on] my bucket list, that’s how much of a random blessing it was,” she said. “I had so far to go in terms of my career in general, so it was a blessing of a launching pad to have that experience early in my career. I’m just grateful Kendrick gave that to me.”

The Super Bowl might have been a career highlight, but don’t tell SZA it’s already been a month since it happened.

“A month already? I’m so freaked out by that. I’m so freaked out it’s been a month. That’s unsettling information,” she said. “What do you mean?!”

Lamar and SZA’s “Luther” topped the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a third week and their “Grand National” Tour is set to kick off on April 19. When asked what the secret is to their successful working relationship, SZA laughed: “I just do what Kendrick says, that is the secret!”

“But seriously, whenever he’s coming up with an idea for something that’s brand new that I’ve never entered before, I kind of just like to follow his lead and allow myself to be malleable and coachable,” she continued. “Whatever he thinks, I try to just respect it and expand on and then maximize it by adding on my little flare.”

As for what fans can expect from their tour, she promised “it’s going to be so fun.”

“I don’t want to say too much before he says anything, but it’s going to be a doozy that’s for sure,” she teased.

While SZA has taken the music industry by storm over the past several years, her more recent foray into acting is proving to be just as successful. The comedy One of Them Days was a hit at the box office. SZA had no idea just how successful it was because she was at a silent retreat.

“That was so crazy, I had just come out of like eight days of silence in India. I was just like, ‘What?’ I missed the whole thing!” she recalled. “It was very cool, though. I couldn’t believe it.”

Between the movie and her new State Farm ad, it’s clear SZA has the acting bug.

“I definitely watch a lot of Marvel and DC,” she said. “That would be so funny, but also I’m dead serious.”

Her dead serious pitch?

“What if they do a backstory behind Storm? Because she comes from a village in this Amazonian-type place,” she said. “What if we do an origin story before she joined the X-Men?”

For now, you can catch SZA in her “Batman vs. Bateman” campaign below.
