Washington previously said it had suspended cooperation following a dispute between Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky last month

The US never suspended intelligence sharing with Ukraine “for anything defensive” that Kiev may require, President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has said. The comment appears to be at variance with one made earlier this month by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who spoke of a “pause.”

Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Witkoff said that his “best understanding” is that the US “never shut off intelligence… for anything defensive that the Ukrainians need.” He added that the issue of intelligence sharing would be “on the discussion list” for a meeting between US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian representatives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday.

When presssed about US weapons deliveries, Witkoff offered less clarity.

”I think that aid was shut off for a bit of time. I’m really not sure where we are,” he said, redirecting the question to Waltz.

When asked by journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday if he would consider ending the reported intel pause, Trump replied by saying: “We just about have. I mean, we really just about have.”

Trump demands more than minerals deal from Ukraine – media

On Friday, several media outlets, including The Washington Post and ABC News, cited a statement by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) announcing the suspension of Ukraine’s access to US-funded satellite imagery in line with Trump’s “directive on support to Ukraine.” Maxar, a major US provider of satellite imagery, also confirmed that Ukrainian accounts in the Global Enhanced GEOINT Delivery program had been temporarily suspended.

According to Time magazine, citing Western and Ukrainian officials, the halt in intelligence sharing significantly impacted Ukraine’s military capabilities and led to substantial casualties and territorial losses, particularly in the occupied part of Russia’s Kursk Region. An unnamed source claimed that Washington’s move had resulted in “hundreds of dead Ukrainians.”

Trump’s decision to suspend military aid and intelligence sharing followed a public dispute with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky at the White House in late February. The heated altercation saw Trump criticize his visitor over his lack of gratitude toward the US and accuse him of refusing to seek a peaceful solution with Moscow.

Answering a question on Tuesday about the apparent freeze of US intelligence sharing with Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed cautious optimism, saying that if the US were to suspend aid altogether, it would “probably be the best contribution to the cause of peace.”
