Austin Butler is diving into a 1990s-set New York City criminal underworld in his new movie with director Darren Aronofsky.
On Wednesday, May 21, Sony Pictures released the trailer for Caught Stealing, which costars Butler, 33, with Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Vincent D’Onofrio and Bad Bunny.
The trailer meets Butler’s character Hank Thompson and his girlfriend (Kravitz) as his British punk-rocker neighbor Russ (Smith) asks him to watch his cat as a favor. Hank soon encounters two men who assault him outside his apartment after they mistake him for his neighbor and learns that they are mobsters, and he continues to grow further embroiled in New York City’s criminal underworld.
“Hank Thompson was a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore, but everything else is going okay,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. “He’s got a great girl, tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant.”
“They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why,” the synopsis adds of the gangsters plaguing Hank throughout the movie. “As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he’s got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out…”

Screenwriter Charlie Huston wrote the movie as an adaptation of his 2004 novel of the same name. Butler and Aronofksy, 56, told Vanity Fair recently that they met during awards season in 2022 and early 2023, when Butler was frequently on the red carpet promoting his movie Elvis and Aronofsky was promoting his film The Whale. Butler told the outlet that he first watched Aronofsky’s 2000 film Requiem for a Dream as a tween, making the opportunity to work with the director an easy decision.
