We might be nearing the end of May, but parade of Cannes Film Festival fashion shows no signs of slowing down, as the stars continue to descend on the Riviera in breathtaking fashion.
One such industry talent, Scarlett Johansson, is no stranger to the Cannes red carpet. But this week does mark a first for the actress, debuting at Cannes in her capacity as a director for her film Eleanor The Great – which premiered at the festival yesterday, earning a five-minute standing ovation.
Johansson is in high demand this week, also in attendance for Wes Anderson’s star-studded project The Phonecian Scheme. Although faced with a consuming schedule, the actress has collaborated with her stylist, Kate Young, to deliver a strong edit of outfits during the festivities, but it was her sweeping lavender-hued look for the Vie Privée red carpet that provided her standout moment thus far.
“We definitely wanted her to feel strong and confident – nothing tricky or overly girly,” says Young of dressing Johansson this week. “We worked with Prada and wanted something ethereal and beautiful. We received a few sketches and loved the shape and the fabric. Once we selected the dress we tried lots of De Beers jewellery and thought earrings, bracelets and rings would be best with the dress. The diamonds are dazzling and the design is modern – which mirrors the dress.”
The look resulted in one of the best of Cannes so far; Johansson arrived on the red carpet in a strapless powdered violet gown which featured lines of intricate tulle ruching all along the bodice before cascading into a flowing skirt which fluidly draped behind her as she walked. Her jewellery was equally as elegant, featuring a pair of double-diamond teardrop laden teardrop earrings, a trio of classic diamond bracelets and a green diamond ring flanked by a white diamond jacket, all from De Beers.
The actress wore her hair in a sleek twisted bun, highlighting her softly-lit make-up which accompanied her blotted red lipstick; a timeless look that would have translated just as well to Hollywood as it did to the French Riviera.
Elsewhere during the week, Johansson opted for more understated looks. For the screening of Eleanor The Great, Johansson and Young kept it classic in a sleek black square halter-neck midi dress and pointed heels, finished with a smattering of De Beers jewellery, while at the film’s photocall she embraced her new directorial position in an appropriately C-suite pinstripe jacket, white shirt and pleated skirt.
While many have been displeased at Cannes’ newly implemented dress code, Young remained unperturbed in her styling choices. “It hasn’t really impacted my work because that’s not really my style,” she explains, of the festival’s decision to ban transparent dresses or gowns with unnecessarily obstructive long trains. “I think the red carpet has been fantastic so far this year because of, or in spite of, the dress code.”
