  • Wearing black in the summer can be a classic yet bold choice.

  • NYC-based stylist & consultant Alexis Badiyi gives us her advice on how to style a black outfit.

  • Choosing the right fabric and silhouette will make all the difference.

If you’ve ever spent a summer in New York City, you know it gets so hot that it becomes necessary to flock to the nearest coast. Unfortunately, that isn’t always an option—and sometimes, the only breeze available is the one from an oncoming subway train. Still, summer in the city is a vibe. You just have to be prepared for the heat. And for most New Yorkers, myself included, wearing black—even on the warmest of days—is a non-negotiable.

There is, however, one obvious problem: black absorbs more heat than lighter colors. So, how do New Yorkers do it? We asked NYC-based stylist & consultant Alexis Badiyi for her go-to tips for wearing black in warm weather. “It’s all about fabric and silhouette,” she says. “Looser shapes in breathable, natural materials—like soft linen, cotton, or even silk—allow black to feel light on the body.” So when you’re figuring out how to work black into your warm-weather wardrobe, you should first check the fabric. Once you’ve confirmed it’s heat-friendly, then move on to silhouette.

Whether you’re dressing in head-to-toe black or it’s just a piece or two, you’ll want to focus on looser fits. “If the silhouette fits well, black can be styled for almost anything,” Badiyi explains. “It’s a forever classic for me. So much of my wardrobe is built around black pieces that layer and transition easily.”

Ahead are  12 different ways to keep your cool (literally) while wearing black all summer long.

Tailored Ease

Layering can lighten things up.

This summer, bra tops aren’t just for the beach. Try layering a black bra underneath a structured blazer for an effortless look. Pair it with loose-fitting black trousers for a comfortable (and not too revealing), effect. Accessorize with statement earrings, sleek sunglasses, a trendy handbag and kitten heels to finish it off. Whether it’s for a dinner party, event, or date, this outfit works for so many chic warm-weather occasions.

Sharp Contrast

Another way to keep things cool? Wear a cropped blazer top with white baggy jeans. The contrast between sharp and casual creates a balanced look that works for a variety of occasions. Plus, the loose denim will keep the air flowing—even when it’s really hot.

Pleat the Heat

Long shorts are already everywhere—and for good reason. Not only are they practical for spring and summer, but they’re also incredibly versatile. Wear them with sneakers or sandals for a relaxed vibe, or slip on a pair of slingbacks with a minimalist black tank for a more polished look.

One Shoulder

When it’s too hot to even think about real pants, cue the sheer pair. Barely there, semi-transparent black pants look especially cute belted over a one-shoulder leotard. Wear this look to a rooftop party, a night out on the town, or anywhere you want to turn heads without breaking a sweat.

Maxi Mode

The easiest thing to throw on in the heat is a one-and-done maxi dress. Just make sure it has a flattering shape and is styled with intention. This kind of dress works for the office, errands, or even meeting up with friends. It’s loose, chic, and makes you look put-together with minimal effort.

Micro Shorts

The hotter the weather, the shorter the shorts—right? Black micro mini shorts (aka hot pants) are a cheeky way to stay cool and still look good. Pair them with a black sheer top and pointed-toe kitten heels for the ultimate It-girl-approved outfit.

Flow State

A flowy dress is an easy choice.

A flowy black top and matching skirt are a tried-and-tested sweat-free combo. They’re also easy to dress up or down, depending on where you’re going. In this case, white flip-flops, sunglasses, and an everyday bag make for a fashion-forward look that you can feel great in.

You want to look hot when you go out—not sweaty. There’s a difference. A voluminous black strapless top will keep you feeling breezy all night long. Style it with bell bottoms, jeans, or a skirt—any of which will guarantee a good night.

Effortlessly Easy

Simple styling for summer is a no-brainer.

A personal summer favorite is a black flowy maxi skirt paired with a crisp white T-shirt. It’s an easy, low-maintenance look that’s both stylish and practical. Add a heart-shaped charm necklace and a pair of flats, and you’re good to go.

Capri Sun

The black capri trend seems to be here to stay (at least for now)––and I’m all for it, especially in the summer heat. You can even opt for a sweat-wicking pair made for working out and style them to look more dressed up. No one will know. Finish the look with trendy accessories, like a black pillbox hat, mesh heels, and an animal print clutch.

Breezy Boho

Never underestimate the power of a black short-sleeved T-shirt. Yes, it’s simple—but it’s also extremely versatile. It can morph into any kind of outfit you want. In this case, it anchors a boho-inspired look full of personality and flair.

Buttoned Up

A great black button-down, made from the right material, can actually be a great summer shirt— even with long sleeves. As long as it’s cotton or linen, you’ll stay cool (and look it, too).
