Portman’s latest look comes after a series of other chic black-and-white outfits.
Natalie Portman appeared at a photocall for the animated film Arco at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival on May 16. For the occasion, the actress donned a chic black-and-white minidress that featured an unusual sculptural detail.
Covered in intricate black and white beading in an abstract floral motif, her daring Dior dress featured a high round neckline, fluttery cap sleeves, and a fitted waist. The miniskirt ballooned out from her hips in a whimsical wide silhouette, updating the pannier or side hoop shape that was first made popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. Portman wore another dress by Acne Studios with a similar silhouette during her recent photoshoot for Interview Magazine.

Portman paired the dress with silver jewelry, wearing diamond drop earrings, a cuff bracelet, and a statement ring. She finished off the look with a pair of black strappy heels and swept her hair back in a slick center-parted ponytail.

The fashion at Cannes has been a major talking point of the festival this year after it was announced that sheer and voluminous looks on the red carpet would be banned. Already, several attendees have potentially bent or broken the rules—after changing one look at the last minute in response to the new rule, Halle Berry wore a nude dress with a thigh-high slit. Meanwhile, Heidi Klum attended the festival in a pink flower-inspired gown with a lengthy train. As for Diane Kruger, she wore a sheer dress with an extra layer of fabric to get past the new rule.
