Minka Kelly discovered something about herself for the production of Netflix’s new series, Ransom Canyon.
“I can learn songs on the piano by heart,” the actress, 44, tells PEOPLE. “I learned while filming Ransom because I had to. So I can memorize songs on the piano. I can’t read music, but if I rehearse it and play it enough times…”
Kelly, who’s currently in a relationship with Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds, says she’s continued to play the songs at home—and she’s trying to add a few to her repertoire as well. “There’s a couple that we play in the house, Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies songs, that I love so much that I tried to learn, and I was able to do maybe the first half of it,” she says. “If it’s slow and simple enough, I’ll give it a whirl.”

The actress credits Reynolds for helping her in her efforts. “I’ll usually ask my partner to show me how it goes,” she says. “And then he’ll show me where my hands go. Then I’ll just do it over and over again until I’ve memorized it.”

Last time I sang out loud:
I sing out loud in the shower. I have music playing in my house constantly, and I’m usually singing along. But only if the music is loud enough that you can’t really hear me.
Last recurring dream:
I used to have one where I was suddenly submerged to the bottom of the ocean. Like an intense crash, but then once I’m at the bottom, I’m swimming among the whales and breathing. It’s very peaceful, and everything is okay.

Last irrational fear:
I have these irrational fears that when something wonderful is happening, it’s going to be taken away from me. Some people in my life are like, “Mink, when are you going to let that fear go?” And I’m like, “Why aren’t you preparing for the worst?”

Last superstition:
If I’m walking down the street with someone, and, say, there’s a street sign, we have to walk on the same side of it, we can’t cross it. Since I was little, my mom would make me. And if it came between us, we would say “bread and butter.” I’ll squeeze in if I have to. Otherwise it will bug me so much that I’ll run back and undo it.
