Maren Morris is reevaluating her dating strategy.
The Grammy winner appeared on the Friday, May 9, episode of the podcast U Up? with Betches co-founder Jordana Abraham and comedian Jared Freid to talk about dating.
When asked if Morris, 35, prefers to date people who also have kids (she shares 5-year-old son Hayes with her ex-husband Ryan Hurd), she said she doesn’t, but feels like “that might be a smart thing to do.”
“Now that I have kind of gotten through my phase of dating where I’m like, I know who I am, I know what I don’t want, I feel like it would be probably the least time-wastey for me to date someone that has either like been through a divorce or has children just because, like, I think they get it.”
“They get how hard it is to try to prioritize time for yourself because your kids are so priority one, and like job stuff…there are a lot of things. Dating is like the last rung of the ladder,” Morris continued. “So, I think it would probably be smart to date someone that has that experience.”
The “Bed No Breakfast” singer also mentioned the different perspective that comes into play when dating someone who has a child versus someone who doesn’t.
“They are not ready for whatever I’m bringing to the table,” she said.
Morris continued: “I’ve talked to people about this before, where you just have to be so secure in yourself to date a mother with the career that I have, who has a kid like, it would have to be a very secure human being to be like, ‘Whoa, she’s got everything covered. What can I add to her life that she hasn’t already given herself?’ “
Morris, who released her latest album Dreamsicle on May 9, concluded that it would take a “strong individual” to be with her.
Morris and Hurd, 38, met in 2013 and were married from 2018 until early 2024 when their divorce was finalized. They welcomed Hayes in 2020.
The “Carry Me Through” singer told PEOPLE in May about a first date she went on in Los Angeles where a fan recognized her and approached her, calling their interaction “the most pure.”
“This fan came up to me and was so lovely — just wanted to say hello and how much my music meant to them; they didn’t even ask for a photo. I was just bowled over,” said Morris.

“They were like, ‘I don’t want to bother you but love your music’ — just in and out. It was the most pure interaction. I loved that they were so respectful,” she said.
