PEOPLE has an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from A Minecraft Movie ahead of its release on digital May 13
The video breaks down Jennifer Coolidge’s Vice Principal Marlene character and how she falls in love with one of the game’s Nitwits
Voiced by Matt Berry, the Nitwit “wanders in” to the real world through an open portal “and ultimately gets hit by a car,” director Jared Hess says
Jennifer Coolidge tests the building blocks of a new love story in A Minecraft Movie.
Ahead of the film’s digital release, PEOPLE has an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip, introduced by star Jack Black, that shows Coolidge, 63, as Marlene, the vice principal of the school attended by young protagonist Henry (Sebastian Hansen).
The video dives into how Marlene meets and falls in love with a Nitwit from the popular game on which the movie is based, following the demise of her real-world marriage.
“Marlene is going through a very traumatic divorce with a no-good husband,” Coolidge says of her character, “and actually has this incredible luck and gets to meet someone from the other world.”

That “luck” involves Marlene hitting a Nitwit with her car, at which points she gets out to survey the scene — and is instantly smitten.
“In the game, there are these villagers who are totally unemployed, and they’re called Nitwits,” explains director Jared Hess.
“When the portal between the real world and the Overworld is still open, this Nitwit wanders in and ultimately gets hit by a car,” adds Hess, 45.
In a voiceover during the car accident, the Nitwit (voiced by What We Do in the Shadows star Matt Berry) says, “Yep, that square-headed beauty is me.”
