It is safe to say that country superstar Morgan Wallen was fed up with Saturday Night Live.
After serving as the musical guest for the March 29 episode of the show, the “Just In Case” singer famously took the stage to close out the show alongside Mikey Madison. After hugging the Anora star, Wallen swiftly left the stage, rather than celebrating with the cast as the credits roll (in true SNL fashion).
Shortly after his departure from the show, Wallen shared an Instagram story waiting in an airplane on the runway, writing “Get me to God’s country” over the image. Because of this, fans were led to believe that there was some bad blood between Wallen and Saturday Night Live, as he was seemingly wanting to leave the Big Apple as soon as possible.
After weeks of speculation, the Tennessee native put rumors to rest on an episode of Sundae Conversations with Caleb Pressley yesterday (May 11), spilling the tea as to what really happened that night.
After exchanging some jokes back-and-forth, Pressley — blogger, podcaster and interviewer for sports and pop culture blog Barstool Sports — asked Wallen, “Seriously, SNL, did they make you mad?”
The “I Ain’t Comin’ Back” singer negated Pressley’s statement, clarifying that he was “just ready to go home.” He explained, “I’d been there all week.”
The pair then discussed the Instagram story heard around the world, to which he simply responded with a smile, “Yeah,” leading fans to believe that there’s more to the story.
Nevertheless, it looks like Wallen rubbed the SNL cast the wrong way regardless, with Kenan Thompson — SNL‘s longest-running cast member — making some controversial comments about the “Love Somebody” singer’s exit.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he dished, “It’s definitely a spike in the norm,” Thompson says. “We’re so used to everybody just turning around and high-fiving us, everybody’s saying, ‘Good job, good job, good job.’ So, when there’s a departure from that, it’s like, ‘Hmm, I wonder what that’s about.'”
Touching on the Instagram story, Thompson added, “The ‘God’s country’ of it all is strange, because it’s like, ‘What are you trying to say?’ You trying to say that we are not in God’s country? We’re not all in God’s country? We’re not all under God’s umbrella? That’s not necessarily my favorite, but whatever. Moving on.”
Nevertheless, it is safe to say that Wallen will not be asked back to Saturday Night Live anytime soon — yikes!
