The Rookie fans are patiently awaiting a verdict on a future spinoff, but there’s already so much to be thankful for.

With so many show cancellations shocking TV watchers this season—including a whopping 5 from NBC alone—there’s reason to celebrate that Nathan Fillion-led ABC police series has already been renewed.

And just a few days shy of the season 7 finale, fans are getting some intel about the highly anticipated spinoff they’ve been waiting for.

While it hasn’t been greenlit just yet, showrunner Alexi Hawley revealed during an interview withTV Line that he’s feeling “positive” about it, which is reassuring considering the first Rookie spinoff, The Rookie: Feds with Niecy Nash in the lead, was cancelled almost immediately.

“I feel really good about the script,” he explained, adding, “Ultimately, we’re waiting to hear what the needs are [at ABC].”

Of course, there’s always an air of uncertainty, as he explained that he was also feeling confident that there would be a third season of The Recruit on Netflix, starring Noah Centineo, which ended up getting axed.

He remained positive, however, noting, “But look, it’s apples and oranges. We just got a Season 8 on Rookie, the show works really well for them… Beyond that, it’s out of my hands.”

It’s also promising that there’s plenty of buzz for the series right now. As of May 6, there was a 35% growth in demo, despite expected fluctuations this season, per TV Series Finale.

While Hawley couldn’t say much, he did tell TV Insider that “there’s a script that I’ve been going back and forth with ABC about. They give notes and I do the work and I’m an ever-hopeful human being,” adding he remains “hopeful” that they’ll be able to “expand the universe.”

The spinoff, announced in Dec. 2024, is set to be “another patrol show set somewhere else. All I can really say is, I think the magic of Rookie does live in the fact that anytime they get out of their police cars, anything can happen. And I think that that’s something that I would try and replicate in a spinoff.”

We’re keeping our fingers crossed!
