Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) will speak at the Democratic state conventions in South Carolina and California at the end of this month as the former vice presidential candidate stirs speculation of his own presidential ambitions.

The two states are particularly notable as South Carolina is the first state in the Democratic primary process and California has a larger number of Democrats than any other state. Both events will take place on May 31.

“Governor Walz has earned national recognition and praise for his people-first approach to leadership,” the South Carolina Democratic Party said in a post on the social platform X. “We are honored to welcome him to South Carolina.”

“We’re fired up to welcome Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to the Convention stage in Anaheim,” California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks said in a statement. “He’s a former teacher, a veteran, and a trailblazer who’s spent his career fighting for working families and standing up for the values we all share — fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all.”

The New York Times reported his plans earlier on Monday.

Walz has been increasingly public in the months since President Trump took office, raising questions about whether he could seek the presidency in 2028 after he gained national prominence as former Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

He received attention last month for comments he made at an event at Harvard University’s Kennedy School Institute of Politics, saying he was chosen because he could “code talk to white guys watching football” and “fixing their truck.”

He said the ticket made mistakes during the abbreviated campaign, and he wants to help the Democratic Party rebuild ahead of the next election cycle.

“Donald Trump has been running since he came down that damn escalator and never stopped. We have to do the same thing or we’re not going to win,” Walz said at the time.
