Kentucky Derby runner-up and early favorite Journalism has drawn the No. 2 post position for Saturday’s 150th runner of the Preakness Stakes, the middle leg of the 2025 Triple Crown series.

The historic race takes place at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 17. Post time is approximately 6:50 p.m.

Six of the nine horses entered in pursuit of a $2 million purse did not compete in the Kentucky Derby.

Journalism, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, is currently the 8-5 top choice. Sandman, who placed seventh in the Derby, will come out of the No. 7 hole and is the second choice at 4-1. Named for the rock band Metallica’s song “Enter Sandman,” Sandman will be ridden by six-time Triple Crown winner John Velazquez.

Clever Again, who did not compete in Louisville and is untested since March 30, is currently the third choice at 5-1. The son of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah will emerge from the No. 8 position.

American Promise, who finished 16th in the Kentucky Derby, is the third horse to travel from Louisville to Baltimore.

Legendary trainer Bob Baffert will have an entry in the race. His horse Goal Oriented drew the rail (No. 1) position and is currently the No. 4 choice at 6-1.

Post positions 1-8 have each produced at least 10 champions since 1909. The No. 6 slot has produced the most winners at 17.

Last year’s champion, Seize the Grey, started out of the No. 6 gate and won after being considered a longshot.

Sovereignty, the winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby, is being held out of the race by trainer Bill Mott, but will compete in the Belmont Stakes on June 7.
