When Blue Bloods ended in 2024 after 14 seasons, fans weren’t the only ones who were disappointed — Donnie Wahlberg was just as devastated.
Wahlberg, who played police officer Danny Reagan on the popular series, opened up how he felt when the show ended — as well as what viewers can expect from the forthcoming spinoff series, Boston Blue — in a recent interview shared to TikTok.
“We all mourn Blue Bloods and still do, me as well…it was very emotional to say goodbye,” Wahlberg, 55, admitted.
“And when this show came along, I had just kinda turned the page and said alright, it looks like it’s not gonna happen for Blue Bloods,” he continued, referring to Boston Blue, which will follow Danny Reagan’s career as he moves from working with the NYPD to the Boston PD.
“We were hoping somehow, some way, somebody would come and we would continue to make our show, then this show came my way,” he continued.
At first, Wahlberg struggled with switching his mindset from one show to the next.
“I had to take a beat to look at it in the right context,” he explained, adding, “In other words, it was like I kept looking back to Blue Bloods, and suddenly I was like wait, I can look forward to Boston Blue. And this is keeping Blue Bloods alive, this is carrying on the traditions and the legacies, this is a way to bring Blue Bloods forward.”
Wahlberg went on to say that once he found the right perspective, working on Boston Blue became “very exciting.”
“The end of something became the beginning of something new,” he said. “That’s kinda how I try to live my life but I will be honest, with Blue Bloods it was hard. Typically I’m like ‘alright, that’s over, what’s next.’ With Blue Bloods it was like ‘damn it’s over I can’t believe it, I’m not ready for that. I don’t want to know what’s next.'”
Boston Blue will premiere on CBS later this fall.
