Is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit here to stay, or is it done done?

The NBC mainstay, which has a combined 50 seasons on the network with Law & Order, is beloved by fans and, as network renewal season looms, some could be getting worried about the future of their favorite police procedural.

But fear not, because neither Law & Order show is going anywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, both programs will be returning for another season, with SVU continuing its record as the longest-running drama in American primetime history with 27 seasons under its belt.

Though SVU is a spinoff of Law & Order, the original show took a multi-year hiatus, making it the second-longest running show in its category with 25 seasons.

SVU fans were thrilled with the news, flocking to the show’s Instagram to write, “They can make 1,000 seasons. I’d always watch, and, “this has made my whole year.”

“My day is better because of this news,” said a third as others agreed, commenting, ““have been watching LO since its debut. I was 19 and now I’m 46. Best written show in crime tv history.”

SVU star Mariska Hargitay also took to social media to celebrate the news, sharing a picture of herself looking directly into a camera, holding up what appears to be a glass of champagne. “Here’s to season 27!!” she captioned the post.

The two Dick Wolf-created shows join fellow Wolf Entertainment programs, Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD, which were also picked up for new episodes in the 2025-2026 season.
