Warning: this story contains spoilers from the May 8 episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) and Jo Wilson’s (Camilla Luddington) wedding was fast approaching on Grey’s Anatomy.

On the May 8 episode of the ABC medical drama, Jo called upon Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) — who returned from Texas to officiate the wedding ceremony — for help with her future mother-in-law Maureen while Link struggled to write his vows after thinking they would “practically write themselves” after planning the big day in only four days.

Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) suggested that he think of the vows as post-op notes, to which he said, “You want me to express my love for Jo like post op notes.” While he was skeptical, he still decided to give it a try.

However, that turned out to be a mistake when they became anything but romantic. Bailey reminded him to say how “you feel in your own way.”

Jo was running into her own problems with Maureen’s overbearing ways. She finally snapped over wearing the veil that she brought, saying, “I don’t want to wear the veil. I’m sorry. It’s just not me…I love that you want to help, but I’ve got everything under control over here.” The outburst caused his mom to leave and Jo to panic.

“She already hated me and I made her cry…What if she doesn’t show up? What if I mess everything up?” she asked. Schmitt reminded her that Maureen’s opinions were just her “being a mom,” to which she said, “I’ve never had a mom.” He then added, “I know, so trust me, sometimes that’s how they show love.”

Happily Ever After

While getting ready to walk down the aisle, Jo apologized to Maureen, saying, “I never had someone like you in my life. It’s gonna take me a minute to get used to it, but I want to.”

She then broke down in tears and told Schmitt of Maureen, “Having her here, just reminded me of what I missed. No father-daughter dance. I didn’t think I’d care at all, maybe I just wish that I had the choice.”

Finally, Jo made her way down the aisle on the arm of Schmitt. Rather than read traditional vows, Link surprised her with an original song including the lyrics, “We have stood by each other through the good times and through tears. We were meant to be together. It just took us 20 years, and I promise to love you always, to be faithful and be true.”

After she shed a tear at his emotional song, he asked, “You ok?” and she jokingly responded, “No, how am I supposed to follow that?” before they finally tied the knot!

Never Letting Go

After reuniting with Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and returning from the vacation, Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) stepped in to help Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) with Nora Young’s infected graft following the surgical repair of her esophagus.

When Owen asked if she could get involved following his hookup with Nora during their open marriage, Teddy was quick to shut down his concerns, saying, “I don’t love the fact that you slept with her, but after the last two weeks, the therapy, the talking, the sex as far as I’m concerned, she’s just another patient.”

Owen later found Nora and apologized for not reaching out more, she responded, “It’s fine. We had a lovely night, and you were a perfect gentleman when it had to end.” She then asked him to “help me stay strong” amid her medical struggles and he promised that he would.

Later, Teddy and Winston explained their surgical plan that would stop the spread of the infection. When Nora tried to address her situation with Owen, Teddy reassured her, saying, “It’s okay. I am going to take excellent care of you like I would any other patient.”

However, they ran into complications in the OR and ultimately had to stop the procedure without fixing the graft. Teddy was tasked with delivering the bad news to Nora and told her there was nothing more they could do to help her.

When Owen learned what happened, he appeared shocked and told Teddy that he was only concerned about Nora’s kids. He then went to Nora’s room and emotionally told her, “It’s not fair.”

As they held hands, she confessed, “I know I shouldn’t say this, but I’m dying, so I have a pass now. I think I’m a little bit in love with you.”

“I don’t know what to say,” he replied, and she asked him to stay with her. He then wrapped her in his arms.

Meanwhile, Teddy was still hatching a plan to help Nora at the wedding. She and Winston then decided to return to the hospital to look at her scans. When she went to Nora’s room, Teddy found Owen holding her in his arms and gazing into her eyes.

The End of the Road

It was a race against time for Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd), and Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) to figure out why their young patient Dylan was suffering from locked-in syndrome — and was only able to communicate by blinking her eyes.

Amelia was upset when Lucas gave Dylan’s parents false hope amid the waiting game for her condition to improve. She snapped, “You raised their hopes, because it’s easier than saying the truth, which is there is a strong chance I can’t reverse Dylan’s paralysis. You need to keep it real. And if you can’t do that, take yourself off this case or I will.”

Dylan’s condition worsened, and her parents turned on the doctors. Amelia then told Lucas that while she appreciated his “tenacity” with patients, this was why “we don’t over promise” to parents.

Lucas and Simone found themselves at odds once again over how to handle Dylan’s case. Lucas wanted to remain optimistic, while Simone wanted him to be realistic. He had heard enough and said he didn’t want to “have to explain why I want to save my patient.”

Later, they continued to argue about Dylan and Lucas questioned, “What’s wrong with believing in a future? What’s wrong with hoping for the best?”

When Lucas insisted that they needed to keep “fighting” for patients, she responded, “Not everyone can take risks like you. Not everyone gets bailed out when it goes wrong,” seemingly referring to his second chance at Grey Sloan.

“I’m done, Simone,” he said, and she pleaded, “We should talk.”

“About what? Our future? You made it pretty clear how you feel about that. [It] just took me a little longer to realize that realistically, we don’t have one,” he said before walking away.

Simone tried to find solace by drinking at Joe’s Bar, but she got more than she bargained for and hooked up with a stranger in the bathroom.
