Abigail Spencer starred on All My Children from 1999 to 2001
During her time, she rubbed elbows with the show’s legendary star Susan Lucci
Speaking to PEOPLE, Spencer recalled a time her mom visited the set — and how she reacted to meeting the daytime TV royalty
Working with Susan Lucci on All My Children was “special” for Abigail Spencer — and her mom!
At the New York City premiere of The Actor, the 43-year-old actress and producer, who portrayed Becca Tyree in the long-running ABC series, remembered the moment her mother Lydia met the soap opera legend, 78.
“My mother bowed and curtsied to Susan Lucci when she arrived on set,” Spencer told PEOPLE. “She was so overcome by her beauty and her prowess.”
She continued, imitating her mom’s over-the-top formality: “My mother literally couldn’t help but [say], ‘Oh, hello, Ms. Lucci!’ “

Spencer began her career on All My Children in 1999 after being discovered in the audience of Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. Before departing the show in 2001, her character had romantic storylines with Josh Duhamel’s Leo du Pres and Scott Chandler, played by Forbes March at the time.
Over the years, she has had notable recurring roles in shows like Suits with close friend Meghan Markle and Grey’s Anatomy as Owen Hunt’s sister Megan. Most recently, she made a guest appearance on the hit Fox drama 9-1-1, playing detective and secret serial killer Amber Braeburn opposite Angela Bassett and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

She has also stepped behind the camera to produce movies under her production company Innerlight Films, which she runs with director Duke Johnson. Together, they produced their first live-action feature film, The Actor, starring Gemma Chan and André Holland.
“Me being an actor has informed my producing because I feel like I understand everyone’s experience on set,” she explained to PEOPLE. “My whole role in producing is hospitality, to help everyone in a creative role, to feel seen, to feel heard, create a lovely experience so they can do their best work.”
