Travis Kelce fans got the jump scare of their lives when they mistook Sam Smith for the Kansas City Chiefs star on the Met Gala’s red carpet this year.
In footage originally uploaded to X by The Hollywood Reporter and reposted by several fan accounts, the “Stay With Me” singer was seen posing on the red carpet outside of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the evening of Monday, May 5.
The musician wore a flowy black coat that looked like a combination between a suite jacket and a shawl, with a puffy hem that gave the appearance of a skirt over their black slacks. But while Kelce is known for his unique sense of fashion, it was Smith’s close-cropped hair cut, facial hair and thick-framed glasses that made it easy to mistake them as the legendary tight end while slowly turning toward the camera, and several fans were stunned to realize they’d been duped, inadvertent though it may be.

“I THOUGHT THIS WAS TRAVIS KELCE MY HEART STOPPED,” one person exclaimed while sharing the video clips, with plenty admitting, “Wait cuz no way I did too 😭.”
“I CANT BREATHEEJEISHSISJS HE DOES I LITERALLY THOUGHT IT WAS HIM TOO,” another admitted, as someone else questioned, “No but seriously why did it look like him at first lmao.”
“WAIT I SEE IT IM CRYING,” somebody else wrote emphatically.
“STOP I KINDA SEE IT 💀,” another agreed, with someone else dramatically replying, “THE SCREAM I JUST SCRUMPT.”
One misread the caption altogether and “completely believed” that Kelce was in attendance, but, ultimately, he and his superstar girlfriend, Taylor Swift, left fans to keep waiting for their highly anticipated red carpet debut.
