Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds sat out the 2025 Met Gala as their legal battle with Justin Baldoni continues.
The annual fashion event was held Monday, May 5, in New York City, where the theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
Lively, 37, is usually a staple at the Met Gala, having first attended in 2008. The Gossip Girl alum wore an extravagant Atelier Versace gown, opera gloves and a crown when she co-chaired alongside her husband in 2022. Reynolds, 48, donned a simple velvet tux that year.

The event holds a special significance for the couple as it’s where they made their red carpet debut back in 2014.
The couple’s absence from the 2025 event does not come as a surprise. PEOPLE previously reported in March that they would not be attending. “Blake and Ryan haven’t gone since 2022, when they were co-chairs, and they will not be in attendance this year,” a source said at the time.
When 2023 rolled around, Lively confirmed on a red carpet during the grand re-opening of the Tiffany & Co. Fifth Avenue in New York City that she would be missing the annual event.
“You will not,” Lively told reporters, when asked whether fans would see her at the annual biggest night in fashion. “But I will be watching.”
The mother of four later shared a photo on her Instagram Stories showing her pumping breastmilk in a bathroom. She added a sticker to the bathroom selfie to make it look like milk is pouring out of her chest. “First Monday in May,” she captioned the shot.

Lively and Reynolds recently celebrated the premiere of her newest movie Another Simple Favor in New York on April 27. The actress wore a mint green Tamara Ralph gown with a figure-hugging lattice bodice and chiffon skirt. She accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels.
Earlier in the month, the two made an appearance at the TIME100 gala where Lively embraced an Old Hollywood-inspired look in a Zuhair Murad muted pink gown with off-the-shoulder straps.
Reynolds also made an appearance at Green Day’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony in Los Angeles on May 1.

Lively’s absence at the Met Gala comes amid her ongoing legal battle with her It Ends With Us director and costar Baldoni, 41, which kicked off in December 2024 as she sued him, alleging sexual harassment and a retaliatory smear campaign. Wayfarer Studios, Baldoni’s production company, was among others named in the suit.
Baldoni denied the allegations and countersued Lively and Reynolds, as well as the couple’s publicist Leslie Sloane, for $400 million, alleging defamation, civil extortion and more. They’ve called that lawsuit “meritless.” A trial date set has been scheduled for March 2026.
