Fashion’s biggest night, the annual Met Gala to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, is here. The first Monday in May always shapes up to be quite the aesthetic feat, but this year it will surely deliver, as the museum’s exhibition is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” offering a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through the concept of dandyism. In keeping with the exhibition’s sole focus on menswear—its also the first ever to exclusively feature designers of color—the evening’s dress code makes a nod to suiting and menswear with the theme “Tailored for You.”

As always, Anna Wintour is co-chairing the event, alongside honorary chair LeBron James, as well as Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, and Colman Domingo as co-chairs. That’s a glittering red carpet line-up to start, but as this year’s gala features the first host committee since 2019, it is anticipated that André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Simone Biles, Jonathan Owens, Grace Wales Bonner, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Regina King, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Olivier Rousteing, Tyla, Usher, and Kara Walker will all be in attendance too.

That’s a lot of icons for one red carpet. But to start things off, Colman Domingo opened the blue carpet with a custom Valentino cape (an homage to the late, great André Leon Talley) and then unveiled an opulent second custom look inspired by the history of the Moors and their impact on the Harlem Renaissance. And then of course there was Diana Ross taking the carpet by storm in a look from her own archive, and many, many more major fashion moments.
