Kamala Harris is officially a Met Gala gal!
The former vice president of the United States, 60, stepped out for fashion’s biggest night on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in epic style. Harris wore a custom Off-White gown, designed by creative director IB Kamara, per Vogue.
Harris’ dress elegantly draped just past her feet, and featured an asymmetrical neckline. Her right sleeve flowed down the length of her gown — which was made from black and white cady silks for a “deep, luxurious texture,” the designer told the outlet. She added a subtle pop of color with a green jeweled ring and earrings. Attending alongside Harris, her husband Doug Emhoff wore a tuxedo by Brunello Cucinelli.

Harris praised this year’s choice of theme in a statement to Vogue, stressing the immediate importance of combining activism and creativity on such a large platform.
“Art has always had a significant impact on not just culture, but also our policies and politics. Artistic expression—whether it’s dance, music, visual arts, or fashion—has a way of capturing the mood and language of the people without words,” Harris said in a statement to Vogue, adding, “Art has the power to shape the conversation about where we are today and where we need to go.”

In October 2024, Vogue shared details on the 2025 Met Gala, announcing that Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour would be co-chairs for the event, alongside LeBron James as honorary chair. The gala, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on the first Monday in May, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the theme for the gala.
Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton said that the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”
The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.
The Met Gala’s dress code for this year is “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. This year’s event also has a star-studded host committee that includes Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Usher and Angel Reese.

With this year’s theme being dedicated to tailored suiting, it only made sense for Harris to make her debut. The politician has been known to favor a power suit throughout her career. She rocked two different suits when she made her Vogue cover debut in 2021, just before former President Joe Biden’s inauguration, including a powder blue number. With the second look, she also wore a pair of black and white Converse Chuck Taylors that were prominently displayed beneath her ankle-length pants.
Even former President Barack Obama has acknowledged Harris’ power with a well-tailored suit. Obama faced criticism for wearing a tan suit in 2014 during his presidency (when some said it was too “casual” for the work he was doing), and he took to Instagram 10 years later to defend his outfit choice.
His method? Comparing it to Harris’ similar suit color at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August 2024. The presidential hopeful was wearing a camel-colored Chloé for her appearance at the event, and Obama shared a side-by-side photo of the two of them on social media.
He wrote in the Instagram caption, “How it started. How it’s going. Ten years later, and it’s still a good look! IWillVote.com.”

Harris isn’t afraid to add some sparkle and shine to a look, though! For Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour in 2023, she and husband Doug Emhoff dressed to the nines for a date night out at the show. Harris wore a gold sequinned LaQuan Smith shirt with white trousers and gold pointed-toe pumps, while Emhoff wore a black blazer over a white dress shirt with dark pants and sneakers.
