Marvel’s latest film, Thunderbolts*, brings back some familiar faces—but not the ones you might expect. Instead of reuniting the Avengers, this story centers on a ragtag crew of reformed villains, thrown together for a mission that traditional superheroes can’t tackle. Tensions run high among the group, but as the stakes rise, they must not only face a formidable new threat, but also reckon with the shadows of their own pasts.
The movie, which opens in theaters today, marks the official conclusion of Marvel’s Phase Five. Directed by Beef’s Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* blends explosive action with indie-style intimacy and a surprising dose of humor.
Florence Pugh reprises her role as Yelena Belova, the emotionally guarded assassin introduced in 2021’s Black Widow. She’s joined by Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier; David Harbour as the eccentric Red Guardian; Wyatt Russell as the volatile U.S. Agent; Hannah John-Kamen as the unstable Ghost; and Olga Kurylenko as the mysterious Taskmaster, a silent mimic with a dark past; and Geraldine Viswanathan in a new role. They’re thrust into a dangerous mission by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), whose true motives remain shrouded in mystery.
“It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes,” Pugh told Empire, highlighting how Thunderbolts* distinguishes itself from the studio’s recent slate of films.
Where can I stream Thunderbolts*?
Currently, Thunderbolts* is only playing in theaters. However, like most recent Marvel films, it’s expected to make its way to Disney+ after its theatrical run.
Until then, the only way to see Marvel’s latest team in action is on the big screen.
